Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rawson Green

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Rawson Green and the rest of Derbyshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in that tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Contact us so our team will tell you what follows from here before you do anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for several miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start the car. And once started, never believe it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Flicking the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition be.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort, and we'd sooner get to an awkward spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Derby Road, put the hazards on then leave it there.
  • Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting DE5 8 — that is what settles whether the van arrives or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, about how much, plus if the car has started. These three facts decide the entire visit.

On a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Most of the job begins at the pump, meaning a big share of it ends up completed there. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at JET that's typically where this drain happens.

Before your engine has fired — a garage is the only place the mistake gets halted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Very much worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Rawson Green

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside The Co-operative Food now. Time elapsed isn't the thing we need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your BMW 3 Series will have seemed entirely ordinary on the way back from Kilburn Junior School — they all do, and that's the snag. Diesel into a petrol motor mostly will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, pulls away like nothing happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

You drive off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and checked it runs correctly on clean diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park at The Hunters Arms, the tainted fuel comes out of the tank, your lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when our engineers get to your car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

The pump is not turning, so whatever your diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Denby Institute and Recreation Ground, none of that is going on now. Nothing gets worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but do not drive it home to buy any.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you phone us — some agreements want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then call us about the Mercedes E-Class close to Kilburn Baptist Church, and don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a car they collected two days ago, and our technicians work it out on site. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Rawson Green and the areas beside it

Those same trips get us to Kilburn, Denby Bottles, Cinderhill, Lower Kilburn and Smithy Houses as well as Rawson Green, which is a village.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations around Derbyshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Close to the boundary, or somewhere the satnav struggles with? Ring us to enquire instead of assuming.

Look at the map for the ground shown here. We work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

Stuck at the kerbside near Rawson Green

The opportunity to pull in anywhere safe does not fall to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and landed on the verge beside Bywell Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Fine right there? Wait by it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. Pressing on does the car far more harm than a van driving out to a difficult spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Run it already? Pull over, then check below

Here is where the local M1 matters, under 10 miles from Rawson Green. A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible junction and switch off. Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in our van.

Rawson Green itself

Rawson Green is a village in Derbyshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of around 75 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Rawson Green lies approximately 6 miles from Derby, making it a commuter-friendly location, and is also close to nearby places such as Kilburn and Denby Bottles. Rawson Green has a population of around 932 residents, who enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding countryside. Rawson Green is located in the East Midlands region, about 117 miles from London.

What comes next when our engineers reach you in Rawson Green

  • The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
  • Our technicians empty your tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleared.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • After it is fired up, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Rawson Green

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — do not fire it up — but this issue is not. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal around Rawson Green has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Rawson Green?

One figure wouldn't be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Rawson Green

I am on a forecourt around Rawson Green. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this happens. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Never turn your engine on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let it stay that way. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
