Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rawyards? Don't Start It
Never fire up your engine. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that's settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Rawyards and the remainder of North Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Just one call our way will be plenty: our engineers shall tell you what comes next. Make that first.
Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel
- As you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. This is why you never fire it up, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part most people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — that high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: flicking it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into just those parts.
- Don't thin it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
- A vehicle that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Waverley Drive? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An odd place works for us better than a started engine.
- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting ML6 6, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how many litres, and if the engine has run. These three replies decide the entire job.
Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on the forecourt?
It starts at a forecourt, generally. Regularly the job finishes there as well. The drain normally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the site's consent, that's somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.
The forecourt is the one location it gets caught before the engine has started. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys.
Attendants will generally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the offer. Starting it for four car lengths? Never.
Petrol in your Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Morrisons, somewhere in Rawyards? Then ring us, and leave the motor out of that — not even to exit that space. Somebody gets to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines purged, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile draws little, and so these tend to be the easy ones.
Easy job, this one — till somebody takes it home. A diesel Audi A3 left outside Albert Bar with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so leave the vehicle and ring us once it is light. Expect a question about the trip there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what will not burn can work past the rings then into the engine oil.
Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted parts that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Ford Kuga travelled, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and flat on the way back is how the drive to Central Park went, then, and your tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.
Why we're firm about not driving on: the pump sits ahead of your injectors, and so whatever a worn-out pump sheds passes on with the fuel. Leave the Citroen C3 near Waddell Street Community Centre and call us.
The filter, your lines, the pump and the rail: that's where the blend is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So the tank isn't where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Volvo XC60 that made it by Cairnlea Parish Church needs the circuit purged rather than drained.
Will our engineers reach your part of Rawyards?
As a residential suburb, Rawyards gets a steady call, whilst the places close by come with it on the same journey: Drumgelloch and Airdrie, Thrashbush and Holehills, Gartlea.
Our engineers still come. Those names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most towns in North Lanarkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Close to a border, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Contact us to check instead of guessing.
Look at the map for the patch covered here. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians serve, and none of that requires your vehicle to move to us.
Stranded by the kerbside somewhere in Rawyards?
Not everybody has a safe spot to pull in. Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge on Kirkness Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.
Fine right there? Sit by it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. We'll take the van to a tricky place without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is far better than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has travelled
under 3 miles out of Rawyards, your M8 is what counts here. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Take the next junction that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart it to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring alters.
A little about Rawyards
Rawyards is a suburban area situated on the riverside in North Lanarkshire, with a mix of flat housing and local amenities. Rawyards sits at an elevation of 151 metres, close to the nearby towns of Airdrie and Drumgelloch. Rawyards is located near the city of Glasgow, which is approximately 10 miles away, and is part of the wider Glasgow urban area. Rawyards has a population of around 4718 people, living in a predominantly flat-based residential community.
What comes next when our technicians reach you in Rawyards
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
- Our engineers clear the tank of the contaminated mixture.
- Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what started the issue.
- We put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
- We fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
That has the car ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Rawyards?
The problem is not the same, though the opening rule is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.
Both are ours. There is a separate Rawyards page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Rawyards
One price would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:
- This is the key one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
- Where your car is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.
A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Rawyards
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Rawyards?
A big part of this work takes place there, so yes. Our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Whether the motor has run counts much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more commonly than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Your pump still has to put up with it, since the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
Is your car still with you?
The motor stays off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car after that. This is recoverable from a lot more often than people expect, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.
