Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Redlynch? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Redlynch or the rest of Wiltshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Just one ring to us is plenty: we will explain what happens after this. Try that straight away.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. That's why you do not fire it up, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We'd rather drive to a tricky place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Goggs Lane, that means hazards on and keep the car.
  • Before you ring, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning SP5 2 — that's what settles whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • Three replies determine the full job: the liquid you put in, the approximate quantity involved, plus whether it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

The high-pressure fuel pump did that morning run running on a fuel that had given up much of the protection it is made for. Diesel protects that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So picture a diesel Skoda Octavia, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left standing at Dean till it dawns on you at about eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a lot, which is why the question our technicians ask you is about miles rather than hours. Ring us. Leave the vehicle precisely where it is.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a hurried morning dash needs plenty — so three miles in your Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine at the gates of Morgan's Vale and Woodfalls Church of England Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone.

Here's the entire mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the normal Little Nursery Copse call — a diesel Audi A4, out there without fuss and back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it escapes past those gaps and not building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than your engine was designed round. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Draining the Ford Focus, changing your filter where there is a serviceable one, rinsing the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the whole system: that is this job, and it's shaped by the worst of it waiting in the lines rather than in your tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from close to Morgans Vale and Woodfalls Village Hall — which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and so the place itself is seldom the trouble. A tight parking spot is better than a vehicle driven somewhere more convenient.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some contracts demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about your diesel Mercedes A-Class near St Birinus Church. You'll not know how full the tank was. Barely anyone does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on the spot regardless. Our engineers ask since the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor knocks and smokes and flattens off.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Redlynch

Can petrol be drained from your diesel on the forecourt?

The job starts at the pump, typically. Frequently it finishes there as well. The drain generally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the station's permission, that's a spot our technicians work, and often.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the one spot this ends up spotted. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting the car four bays does not warrant starting it.

Will our engineers reach your part of Redlynch?

Redlynch is a village, so our vans get out to it and to anywhere near it on the same journeys: Morgans Vale, Lover, Woodfalls, Bohemia and North Charford.

Our engineers still come. The names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places in Wiltshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near a border, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Call us and enquire instead of presuming.

The map is the patch the page spans. We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and the vehicle does not need to move to us.

Roadside breakdowns in Redlynch

Not everyone has a chance to stop anywhere sensible. If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge on Harthill Drove, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a normal call for us instead of an odd one.

Wait with the vehicle when it is sensible to sit there, yet clear of it if it is not. Never fire it up to reach a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the fuel system. Carrying on does the car far more harm than a technician coming out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no problem for us.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under 10 miles from Redlynch, the local M27 is what counts now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it affects what goes in our van.

Where is Redlynch?

Redlynch is a small village in Wiltshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of around 70 metres. Redlynch lies near the city of Salisbury, approximately 7 miles to the south, and is surrounded by other nearby villages such as Morgans Vale and Woodfalls. Redlynch has a population of around 591 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Redlynch is located in the South West region of England, about 77 miles west of London.

When our engineers arrive with you around Redlynch: what happens

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
  • Our engineers empty the tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that started the trouble.
  • Your system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • After it's started, our technicians check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves your car ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, and because all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Redlynch AdBlue removal is a different job

Don't crank it: that first instruction stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Redlynch page. Both are ours to handle.

Redlynch costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is laid out below, because this job is not one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single figure on this page.

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank holds.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. If it isn't time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Redlynch motorists

At a petrol station in Redlynch, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big portion of this work happens there, so yes. We work at BP and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave the vehicle off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more often than people assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Switched off is how the car remains.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists expect, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
