Petrol in Diesel

Redwood: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Redwood and the rest of Greater Manchester, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Ring us before anything else happens, and you'll see what comes next.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up — and do not depend on it when it does start. That is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and pulls away without complaint for several miles. It is not fine. It's grinding your fuel system while you drive.
  • Turning the ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Never put diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to handle, and we'd sooner come to a tricky location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Redwood Avenue, put your hazards on then keep the car there.
  • The van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting WN5 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how much, plus if the car has fired. Those three details determine your whole job.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Driving it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has sent real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return trip would about double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can sit at Pemberton perfectly happily. Phone from the platform if simpler; standing over us whilst our engineers work isn't necessary.

Never risk it. The journey home from Fishergate Inn is perfectly possible, which is exactly the trouble — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the components the fuel is meant to lubricate. Call us, then let the Ford Focus stay where it stands.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the precision components that are meant to build that pressure, so the further a diesel Mercedes C-Class went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how the trip to Pemberton Memorial Garden went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off and phone us.

The slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of sloppy. New places see most of that for that reason. So: topped up close to Mount Zion Independant Methodist Church without thinking, in a diesel Audi A3 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody realises, and miles decides how much petrol reaches your injectors.

Your filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that is where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. So your tank isn't where most of the damage sits by this point, and a diesel BMW 5 Series that got by St Francis of Assisi needs your system purged instead of emptied.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big portion of this work ends up finished at a pump, since that's where it mostly starts. Still at Esso? Then that is normally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

Nowhere but a garage can the mistake be caught with the engine still unrun. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That's still not a disaster, and we sort it out where the vehicle stands. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Areas our vans cover around Redwood

Lamberhead Green, Pemberton, The Bell, Kitt Green, Orrell — all of those on the rounds that bring us out to Redwood itself, a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. The places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations around Greater Manchester, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Ring us and enquire rather than guessing, especially where you're on a boundary or somewhere your satnav can't find.

Check the map for the ground shown on this page. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is territory our engineers cover, and none of that asks the car to come to us.

Kerbside call-outs across Redwood

Not everyone gets the chance to stop anywhere suitable. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Baldwin Street as you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Sit with the motor if it is safe to sit in it, and out of it when it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. A technician heading to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

Here is where your Orrell Interchange comes in — under a mile from Redwood. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next junction that's sensible, pull up there, and never start it to reposition. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

A bit about Redwood

Redwood is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 83 metres. Redwood lies approximately 14.8 miles east of Liverpool and 176.7 miles northwest of London, with nearby places including Lamberhead Green and Pemberton. Redwood has a population of around 3737 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

What happens when our engineers get to you in Redwood

  • Our engineers establish what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • Away comes the tainted mixture.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what created the trouble, so the lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • When it's turned on, our technicians confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. We do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted early, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Redwood is a different matter

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — do not start it — but the fault isn't. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal around Redwood has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Redwood?

Our technicians can't put one price on this page frankly, because this job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much your tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Redwood

I'm on a forecourt in Redwood. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done. Routinely, provided the site consents: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our engineers answer straight away.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more frequently than motorists assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. The pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Waiting next to it?

The engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
