Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Resaurie? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Resaurie and the remainder of Highland. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the motor has not run and the petrol is still in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Phone before all else begins, and you will learn what happens from there.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • As you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That is why you never start the vehicle, and why you never believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part drivers get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which draws this petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We would much rather travel to a difficult location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a motor that hasn't moved. On the verge on Resaurie, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • A van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts IV2 7, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, roughly how much, and whether the car has fired. These three replies settle your whole visit.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Most of this work starts at the pump, which means a big share of it gets completed there. If you are still at the forecourt at Tesco, that is generally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

A forecourt is the one setting the mistake gets halted before the motor has started. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push it. Worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Resaurie

We are in car parks like the one outside Tesco Extra all the time, and it's rarely your fuel that complicates them. It is that bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height barrier at the entrance, which settles whether our van gets to you at all. So mention how penned in you are when you call, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If there is no space to work beside the Renault Megane, our engineers move it without the motor. That is not fuss over a few seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank toward your pump, and a motor moved twice for a roomier space is quietly a bigger job than one nobody touched.

Your Audi A4 stays where it is in the car park by the pub in the village for the whole job, which normally goes like this. First our technicians ask what went in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since, because most of the work depends on those replies. That tank is emptied of the contaminated mix, the fuel lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it's a serviceable one. With new diesel in and your system primed, the car is fired up and checked, and once it is running smoothly you drive away.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the run to Maxwell Park, look at the tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the tight gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile your diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, ring us.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you phone us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then phone us about the Mercedes E-Class by St. Mary-in-the-Field, and do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was. Almost no one can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the blend, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle ragged, and your diesel BMW 5 Series is parked up close to Gospel Hall. The engine isn't failing — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours usually get driven once more before anybody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, then phone us.

Service around Resaurie

Resaurie is a residential suburb, and we go out to the town and to the villages around it on those same rounds: Smithton, Easter Muckovie, Woodside of Culloden, Inshes and Westhill.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations in Highland, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours. Presuming is the thing to avoid, especially on the border or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Contact us and enquire.

The map shows the ground the page covers. Your vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We work throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped on the roadside anywhere in Resaurie?

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull in anywhere suitable. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, finished up by the verge beside Caulfield Road North or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Clear of your car while it is not wise to sit there, with it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However awkward the location, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The M90 is the road which matters here, and runs over 50 miles from Resaurie. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in our van.

Where is Resaurie?

Resaurie is a suburban area located on the coast of the Moray Firth, near the city of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. Resaurie sits at an elevation of 48 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Resaurie is close to several nearby places, including Smithton, Easter Muckovie, and Woodside of Culloden, and is situated approximately 2.6 miles from Inverness. Resaurie has a population of around 3220 people, making it a relatively small but significant community in the region.

What our technicians do when we arrive with you around Resaurie

  • We check what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • We empty that tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what caused the problem, and so the lines get flushed and the filter cleared.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • Our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to set off. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Resaurie?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this problem underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Resaurie page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Resaurie

One number would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Resaurie

Fuel drains on a Resaurie petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work happens. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our technicians attend Highland Fuels and the other forecourts locally all the time.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Leave the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than motorists fear, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
