Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rhyl?
With your tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Rhyl and the rest of Denbighshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Call us before all else begins, so you'll learn what follows from there.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And once started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition off as well: flicking it on is commonly enough to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Sussex Street? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started engine.
- Have your position ready before you phone. A postcode beginning LL18 1 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how much, and if the car has fired. Those three replies determine your whole job.
Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sat outside the nearest station since first thing? The afternoon has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is inert. It was the trip in that pulled weakened diesel through your pump. Call us before you drive it.
Diesel Nissan Qashqai. A few litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Turned off now, at Seagull Polski Sklep. That's the call our technicians like, as the question beneath it's about amount through your pump rather than hours on the clock.
A diesel Peugeot 3008 parked in the car park by The George carrying a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till someone takes it home. Leave it overnight and phone us in the morning. Nothing worsens as it sits. What we'll want to know is whether that trip there was short and cold, since that is where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and whatever won't burn can work past the piston rings and into the sump.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past clearances instead, leaving the engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it passes through — that is the whole mechanism. It explains the normal West Rhyl Green Park call too: a diesel Audi A3 that travelled out without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by Sussex Street Christian Centre. For a diesel Vauxhall Astra whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why your lines get rinsed and not just the tank cleared.
On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel
Pumps are where this job often kicks off, and where a fair part of it closes. We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission, so if you're still at Morrisons that's usually where this drain takes place.
Before your engine has run — a garage is the single setting the mistake is caught. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key.
Move the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Firing the car to move four car lengths is not.
Rhyl plus the places beside it
These same journeys take us to Kinmel Bay, Rhuddlan, Towyn, Y-Ffrith and Pengwern besides Rhyl, which is a coastal town.
We do come. The places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most locations in Denbighshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Contact us and check instead of guessing — county lines especially, and wherever a satnav may get wrong.
Look at the map for the patch shown on this page. We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the vehicle never needs to travel to us.
Kerbside stops across Rhyl
Not everyone has the chance to pull over anywhere suitable. Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge beside Queen Street, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.
Remain beside the motor when it is safe to sit in it, yet clear of the vehicle when it's not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: restart the car to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile covered. Driving on does your car far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult location, and that is no problem for us.
Driven it already? Stop, then check below
Here is where the Moreton Spur counts, under 25 miles from Rhyl. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Take the first junction that is safe, stop there, and do not start the car to move it. It alters what we bring, so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.
Rhyl itself
Rhyl is a coastal town in Denbighshire, Wales, situated on the Irish Sea coast at an elevation of around 9 metres. Rhyl lies near the towns of Kinmel Bay, Rhuddlan, and Towyn, and is approximately 4.8 miles from the city of St Asaph. Rhyl has a population of around 15,351 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Rhyl is located about 189.2 miles from London, making it a popular destination for those seeking a coastal retreat.
What we do when our technicians arrive with you in Rhyl
- Our engineers check what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
- Away goes the tainted fuel.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- The engine is turned on and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed quickly, and as everything is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.
Rhyl AdBlue removal is a distinct matter
The fault is not the same, though the first step is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate Rhyl page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Rhyl
Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what changes it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?
Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.
Rhyl motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
I am on a forecourt in Rhyl. Can you drain the car here?
A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians work at Asda Express and the other forecourts nearby all the time.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Whether the engine has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture pulled through it.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more often than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a different issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.
Is the car still with you?
Don't turn the car on again.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car afterwards. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
Call-out fuel draining around Rhyl and across Denbighshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
