Richmond: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Richmond and the rest of Greater London. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While your engine has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Contact us and then our technicians shall explain what comes next before you do any more.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try next
- Never fire it up. Fired up anyway? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for a few miles. People get that backwards. It is not all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition remains off too — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for exactly those components.
- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- A motor that has never moved is the quickest one to sort out, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Richmond Hill Court? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A difficult place suits us better than a started engine.
- Before you phone, gather your position. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts TW10 6 — that is what determines whether our van arrives or circles.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, approximately how much, and also whether the engine has started. Those three answers decide the whole visit.
Can petrol be taken from a diesel at the forecourt?
A big part of the job is done at the pump, since that is where it mostly begins. If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that is usually where the drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent.
Before your motor has run — a forecourt is the one setting this is stopped. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the fuel lines together with the tank. That is still not a disaster, and we put it right where the car stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.
Staff will generally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the offer. Starting it just for four car lengths? Never.
Coverage around Richmond
The same journeys take us to Petersham, St Margarets, Cole Park, Twickenham and North Sheen along with Richmond, which is a riverside town.
Not on that list? It says nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and most towns around Greater London have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Near the border, or somewhere a satnav misreads? Contact us to ask rather than guessing.
Check our map for the ground shown here. Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to come to us.
Shift it out of the gateway and fix it later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by The Vineyard School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 308 is a hassle and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for politeness, it is no longer a tank issue but a fuel system one, since priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes through the filter on to the pump. Let everyone complain. Phone us.
You drive off at the end, once our technicians have started it and confirmed it runs correctly on clean diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park at The Victoria Inn, the tainted fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get flushed and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. It all begins with three questions when we reach the vehicle: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.
Your pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Gothic Gardens, none of that is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy any.
About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Mercedes C-Class left near Celia Johnson hardly two streets on. Phone us, and leave it off. A short distance does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence rinsing your lines instead of only emptying that tank.
Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — by Edwin Chadwick or anywhere at all. Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what is wrong.
Stopped by the kerb somewhere in Richmond?
Some drivers find no safe place to pull over at all. Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge of Ellerker Gardens, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.
Whether you remain with the motor or stand away from it turns on whether sitting nearby is wise. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. We'll bring the van to an awkward spot without any bother, and for the car that is much better than driving on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
under 3 miles out of Richmond, the local M4 is what counts here. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.
Never restart it to reposition. Get off at the next sensible junction then turn off. It alters what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

Our job in Richmond, step by step
- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers change what the work actually is.
- We clear the tank of the tainted mixture.
- What is left in your system shouldn't be what created the trouble, and so your fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
- Our technicians start the car and confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
Then it's ready to pull away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very rare.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Richmond is a separate problem
Do not start it: that first step stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and deposits instead.
Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Richmond page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Richmond?
What changes the price is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.
- This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.
Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Richmond
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Richmond?
Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work gets done. Our technicians visit Texaco and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more regularly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a different issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
Not at all. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Leave it turned off.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the car stay that way. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers assume.
