Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ridgeway? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Ridgeway and the remainder of Bristol. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. When your engine has not run and the fuel is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Ring us before everything else happens, so you'll see what happens from there.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up. Turned on all the same? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally cannot run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. Most people get that reversed. It's not all right — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off too — flick it on and you usually prime that system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for precisely those parts.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Dominion Road, anywhere — an awkward location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.
  • Before you phone, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning BS16 3 — that's what determines whether the van arrives or circles.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how many litres, plus whether your car has started. These three details determine the whole job.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Pumps are where this work often starts, and where a big portion of that finishes. If you are still at the forecourt at Morrisons, that's typically where this drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.

Nowhere else except a garage can it be spotted with the motor still untouched. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key decide how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Worth doing. Firing it just to move four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Ridgeway

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at easy throttle pulls little diesel. Petrol into a diesel BMW 3 Series somewhere in Ridgeway, a boot full of shopping, and you stranded outside International Food Centre — phone us. Leaving the spot isn't worth a restart. The tank gets cleared where it stands, your fuel lines purged, fresh diesel in, and you drive away.

Your diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed completely ordinary on the way back from Chester Park Junior School. They all do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it usually will not run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and moves off as though nothing has happened — all while your high-pressure pump does its work without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be giving. Nothing tells you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to warn you about. Phone us with roughly how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second answer matters more than the first.

Three answers decide most of the work: what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them when we arrive at the car in the car park outside The Greyhound. After that the contaminated blend comes out of that tank, your lines are cleaned, and where your Audi A4 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and your system bled, we fire it up and check it runs correctly before you set off.

Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that is how that run to Ridgeway Playing Fields went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel seeps past the precision components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further the Mercedes E-Class drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off and ring us.

Your filter, the lines, your pump and the rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the damage rests by this point, and a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso that made it near St John's, Fishponds needs your circuit cleared instead of cleared.

Will our technicians cover your side of Ridgeway?

The same runs take us to Speedwell, Upper Eastville, Mayfield Park, Clay Hill and Clay Bottom as well as Ridgeway, which is a residential suburb.

We still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places across Bristol, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Near a boundary, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Contact us and enquire rather than presuming.

Look at this map for the ground covered here. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is ground we cover, and none of that needs your car to move to us.

Stranded by the kerbside anywhere in Ridgeway?

Not everyone gets a chance to pull in anywhere suitable. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge of Irena Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Out of the car when it's not wise to wait there, with it when it is. Never fire up the engine to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the fuel system. A van heading to a difficult place is no problem for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull over, then see this

The local M32 is the one which matters now, and runs under 3 miles from Ridgeway. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that is safe, pull up there, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you call. It changes what our engineers bring.

A bit about Ridgeway

Ridgeway is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Bristol, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Ridgeway sits at an elevation of around 65 metres, close to the city centre and near neighbouring areas such as Speedwell and Upper Eastville. Ridgeway is located approximately 3.1 miles from Bristol city centre, making it a convenient residential area for those working in the city. Ridgeway has a population of around 8566 people, with a range of local facilities and services available.

What happens when our engineers reach you around Ridgeway

  • Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The contaminated fuel is drawn from your tank.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what caused the problem, so the lines get purged and your filter cleaned.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Our technicians fire it up and check it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and because all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ridgeway is a separate problem

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — never start the car — but the fault isn't. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the protection your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Ridgeway has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Ridgeway?

One number wouldn't be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it is not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Ridgeway

At a petrol station around Ridgeway, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It is fixable much more frequently than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. The pump still has to live with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Never turn the car back on.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people expect.
