Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ridgewood

Never fire up your engine. If the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet run, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Ridgewood and the rest of East Sussex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Our team will explain what the next part is. Call us — it goes ahead of all else.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. People have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start the car. And having started, don't trust it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition remains off also — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, and we'd rather get to a difficult place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Lewes Road, put your hazards on then leave it there.
  • Keep your position prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning TN22 5 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.
  • Three facts settle the whole visit: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark volume of it, plus if it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

How many miles you went is what our engineers care about, not how long the vehicle has been stood — and here is why. Diesel does two tasks on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it greases its injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a rushed fill on the trip in, it dawning on you at about eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked at Uckfield since quarter past eight shows those few miles were travelled with your pump labouring on a fluid stripped of a great deal of its protection. Call us then leave the car precisely where it sits.

Petrol in the Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside Co-op Food, somewhere in Ridgewood? Then ring us, and leave the motor out of that — not even to leave that bay. Somebody comes out to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines flushed, new diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile uses very little, so these are often the simple ones.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and generally it won't run, and so the motorist stops there and the damage stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the car fires up, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be supplying. That's the snag, and it is why your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed entirely normal coming back from Harlands Community Primary & Nursery School. They do. From the driver's seat there is nothing to alert you about, so nothing tells you. Ring us with about how far you drove, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through, and petrol weakens it. That is the full process, and it explains the normal Ridgewood Recreation Ground call: a diesel Ford Focus that travelled out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when your fuel thins, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past gaps instead, and the motor gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. No part of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, an uneven idle, clattering: that is a misfuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong. Don't start it to find a better place — switch off where you have stopped, by St Philips Church or anywhere else.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Ridgewood

Can petrol be drained from a diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of the job begins at the pump, meaning a good part of that gets done there. Still at EG? Then that is normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the station.

A filling station is the single spot the mistake can be spotted before the motor has run. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines as well as your tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers put it right where the vehicle is. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Staff will generally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Welcome the assistance. Firing the car for four vehicle lengths? No.

Ridgewood plus the areas beside it

New Town, Horsted Green, Uckfield, Mount Ephraim, Little Horsted — each of these on our trips that carry us across to Ridgewood too, a residential suburb.

We still come. Those places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most places across East Sussex, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. On a border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Call us to ask rather than presuming.

The area the page includes appears on our map. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of that is ground our engineers serve, and none of it requires the vehicle to move to us.

Ridgewood: broken down where you parked

A chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not fall to everyone. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Pipers Field since you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Fine there? Remain with it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it. Never start up your motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into your fuel system. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a van heading out to a difficult place, and that is no bother for us.

Driven it already? Pull in, and see this

The local M23 is the one that matters now, and it sits under 15 miles from Ridgewood. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Pull off at the next safe exit, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you call. It changes what our engineers bring.

Ridgewood itself

Ridgewood is a suburban area in East Sussex, situated near the River Uck and characterised by its detached housing stock. Ridgewood sits at an elevation of 62 metres, with views of the surrounding countryside and the South Downs in the distance. Ridgewood is located near several other communities, including New Town, Horsted Green, and Uckfield, and is within commuting distance of Brighton and Hove. Ridgewood has a population of approximately 3626 residents.

Once our technicians arrive with you in Ridgewood: what follows

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tainted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what caused the issue, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleared.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The engine is turned on and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That leaves your car ready to drive away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Ridgewood?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is the same — never start the vehicle — but the issue isn't. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Ridgewood page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Ridgewood

One number would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Whether a van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Ridgewood motorists

I am on a forecourt around Ridgewood. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this gets done. Our engineers work at Texaco and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It is recoverable far more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Standing next to it?

That engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
