Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ross-on-Wye? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Ross-on-Wye and the remainder of Herefordshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. We will tell you what the next stage is. Ring us — it happens before anything else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Turned on regardless? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Drivers get that confused. It is not okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Flicking the ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • We would rather get to an awkward place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on Market Place, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts HR9 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
  • What went in, about how much, and also if the engine has started — these three answers settle the full call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Ring us before you move the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the vehicle at Ledbury ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and any harm was done on the drive in, when your pump was taking diesel that petrol had diluted.

Each start primes the fuel system and pulls more of that mixture out of the tank and on to your pump — which is why a vehicle shunted twice into a better spot has gradually become a bigger job than one left just where it stopped. So when we cannot work beside the diesel Nissan Qashqai, our technicians roll the vehicle without starting it. None of that is fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Field Fare our technicians visit frequently, and your fuel is seldom the difficult part: that bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar at the way in deciding whether a van gets to you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the vehicle points.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Ashfield Park Primary School, already late, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, ring us. Three miles in the Audi A4 sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a hurried morning run needs plenty.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Dacia Duster went, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and flat on the way back is how the run to The Prospect went, then, and the tank is the place to look. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off and ring us.

Why we are direct about not driving on: your pump rests upstream of the injectors, so whatever a worn-out pump gives off moves on with your fuel. Leave the Peugeot 3008 near Made In Ross Gallery then ring us.

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel on a forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job usually starts, and where a fair part of it closes. Still at Morrisons? Then that's normally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

Nowhere else but a garage can it be caught with the engine still untouched. The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle stands.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Worth doing. Cranking the car to move four car lengths isn't.

Can our engineers serve your end of Ross-on-Wye?

Ashfield, Merrivale, Archenfield, Three Crosses, Overross — each of those on the rounds that take us over to Ross-on-Wye too, a riverside town.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all locations around Herefordshire, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list tells you nothing about if our technicians come. Near a boundary, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Contact us and enquire rather than assuming.

The area this page spans appears on this map. Your car never needs to travel to us. We operate over every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Kerbside breakdowns around Ross-on-Wye

Some drivers get no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge beside Gloucester Road, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Remain beside the car while it's sensible to be in it, and out of it when it's not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. We'll bring our van to a tricky place without any fuss, and for the car that's a lot better than driving on.

The local M50 is the road which matters here, and it runs under 3 miles from Ross-on-Wye. A misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are typically a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our engineers bring.

Our visit around Ross-on-Wye, step by step

  • We establish what was put in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • Your tank is emptied completely.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that started the issue.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • Your engine is started and checked to be sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Ross-on-Wye?

Never start it: that first instruction holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Ross-on-Wye page. Both are ours to handle.

Ross-on-Wye prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What changes the price is set out below, because this job is not one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much your tank holds.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a technician.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Ross-on-Wye

Fuel drains on a Ross-on-Wye petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. We work at BP and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's salvageable much more commonly than drivers expect, even though driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Your pump still has to cope with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
