Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ruan Minor? Don't Start It

Never turn on your engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and the motor has not yet been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Ruan Minor and the rest of Cornwall, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us before anything else begins, and you will know what happens after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Never fire it up. Started anyway? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically can't run, so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off happily, for several miles. Drivers get that reversed. It isn't fine — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: flicking it on is usually sufficient to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Our team would much rather get to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Poltesco Lane, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.
  • Get your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode beginning TR12 7 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if your car has started. Those three details determine the entire visit.

Can petrol be drained from your diesel at a forecourt?

A good chunk of this work is done at a forecourt, because that is where it often begins. If you're still on the forecourt at Kynance Garage, that's normally where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

Nowhere except the forecourt can the mistake be stopped with the engine still unrun. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car is.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Our technicians will head your way, clear that tank, rinse your fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can get home. So if petrol went into the diesel Audi A4 around Ruan Minor and you are stuck at Co-op Food with a boot loaded with shopping, call us — and do not fire it up a second time to exit the bay. A mile or so at easy throttle draws hardly any fuel, so such jobs are often the straightforward ones.

Your diesel Dacia Duster will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from Grade-Ruan CofE Primary School. They always do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it generally will not run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and drives off as though nothing has happened — all the while your high-pressure pump does its work without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be providing. Nothing alerts you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about. Phone us with about how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second answer counts more than the first.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that's how the trip to Sea Acres 9 hole course went, that tank is where to look. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Citroen C3 travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.

Why so blunt about leaving the keys alone? Since the pump is upstream of the fuel injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it loses onward with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Kia Sportage near St Rumon.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into the fuel filter, into the lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Skoda Superb that got near St. Ruan's Well wants its system purged. Emptying is not the same thing.

Ruan Minor and the villages near it

Ruan Minor is a coastal village, so we head out to it and to the areas by it on the same runs: St Ruan, Poltesco, Cadgwith, Grade and Treal.

If yours is not on that list it does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations around Cornwall, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours. Close to a boundary, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Ring us and enquire rather than assuming.

The ground this page spans sits on our map. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your vehicle never needs to move to us.

Stuck by the kerbside anywhere in Ruan Minor?

Not everyone has a sensible place to stop. A normal call for us and not an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge beside Mundys Field or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Whether you wait with the vehicle or move away from it rests on if staying nearby seems safe. Don't start it up to reach a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the system. A van heading to an awkward spot is no bother for us, and it's far better for the car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, and your car has travelled

This is where the local M5 comes in — over 50 miles from Ruan Minor. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is safe, stop there, and never restart the car to move it. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

Ruan Minor is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Ruan Minor is located in the South West region of England, some 244.4 miles from London.

The job in Ruan Minor, step by step

  • The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.
  • The tank is emptied of everything.
  • What is left in the system should not be what started the trouble, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Ruan Minor

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the issue beneath it is a separate one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Ruan Minor page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Ruan Minor?

What changes the figure is set out below, since the job is not one job and we can't frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Ruan Minor drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt in Ruan Minor. Can you drain it on the spot?

A big share of this work gets done there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. It is salvageable a lot more commonly than drivers fear, even though driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Leave it turned off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it remain that way. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
