Petrol in Diesel

Ruchill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't fire up your engine. If the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that is settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, all over Ruchill and the rest of Glasgow City, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Ring us before anything else begins, and you will learn what follows after that.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And if started, never believe it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for precisely those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, and we would much rather come to an odd place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Mayfield Street, switch your hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Before you dial, get your position. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting G20 9 — that's what determines whether our van turns up or circles.
  • What went in, roughly how much, and also whether the motor has fired — those three details determine the whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Clearing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

A large portion of the job is done at a forecourt, since that is where it usually kicks off. Still at Esso? Then that's normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the station.

Nowhere other than the forecourt can this be spotted with the motor still unrun. We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push the car. Well worth doing. Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Ruchill

The tricky part is that bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height barrier on the way in that settles whether a van can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Tesco Extra, mention how much clearance there's around you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our engineers cover frequently. Should there be no room to work beside the diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets shifted with the engine off, and not out of fussiness over a few seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the blend departs your tank for the pump, and two shunts into a nicer spot have silently made a worse job of what was merely a car sitting still.

This is what a job in the car park by The Viking usually looks like. Our engineers arrive at your car, ask what was put in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since — these three replies settle much of the work. Then the tainted blend comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get cleaned, and the filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a serviceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the system is bled. Then our engineers fire it up, check it runs smoothly, and you pull away.

Your pump isn't turning, and so whatever the diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Ruchill Park, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Take your time over this — but don't drive the vehicle home to buy any.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Ford Kuga parked close to Our Lady of the Assumption barely two streets on. Phone us, then leave it off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning the fuel lines rather than only emptying your tank.

Strange locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical instead of sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Filled up near Surf City without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes A-Class you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody spots it, and miles is what decides how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

Ruchill plus the towns beside it

Ruchill is a residential suburb, and our team get out to it and to the places by it on those same runs: Firhill, Wyndford, North Kelvin, Gilshochill and Lambhill.

If yours isn't on the list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of places around Glasgow City, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours. Assuming is the mistake to resist, especially on the border or somewhere your satnav struggles. Phone and enquire.

Check the map for the patch covered on this page. The vehicle does not need to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Ruchill: stranded wherever you pulled up

Not everybody finds a safe spot to stop. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Ruchill Street since you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Out of the motor when it's not safe to sit there, by it when it is. Never fire up the engine to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into your fuel system. Carrying on does the car far more harm than a van coming out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Run it already? Pull over, then check this

Here is where the local M8 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Ruchill. A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they appear are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Come off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It alters what we bring.

Where's Ruchill?

Ruchill is a suburban area in Glasgow City, situated near the River Kelvin and close to the neighbouring districts of Firhill, Wyndford, and North Kelvin. Ruchill sits at an elevation of 57 metres, approximately 2.2 miles northwest of Glasgow city centre. Ruchill is characterised by its predominantly flat-type housing, which accommodates a population of around 7490 residents.

Our call-out in Ruchill, step by step

  • Our technicians establish what was put in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled out of your tank.
  • Our technicians rinse your fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what is left in the system is not what created the issue.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Our engineers turn it on and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Ruchill is a distinct matter

Don't start it: that opening instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal in Ruchill has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Ruchill

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what varies it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much that tank can hold.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Ruchill

At a petrol station around Ruchill, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our engineers visit BP and the other forecourts around town regularly.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. What determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more frequently than motorists expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Switched off is how the car remains.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car remain that way. This is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists expect, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
