Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rush Green? Don't Start It

Don't turn on the motor. If the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not run, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Rush Green and the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Our engineers will show you what the following step will be. Phone — it happens ahead of all else.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start it. And once started, never depend on it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it protects — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so never add diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never moved is the quickest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Rush Green Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning RM7 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.
  • Three answers decide the full call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate amount involved, plus if it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

The job begins at a forecourt, mostly. Regularly it ends at one too. If you are still at the forecourt at Coopers Arms Service Station, that's usually where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets caught with your engine never run, and no place else does it. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where the car stands.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Welcome the offer. Starting the car over four car lengths? No.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Rush Green

The phone call our engineers want goes like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now turned off at ALDI. What we're actually asking is how much fuel your pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

Your Nissan Qashqai remains where it is in the car park outside The Havering Well for the whole job, which normally runs like this. First our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, given that much of the work rests on those replies. The tank is emptied of the polluted mixture, the lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it is a serviceable one. With new diesel in and the system primed, the vehicle is started and checked, and once it's running smoothly you drive away.

Fine on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how that drive to Oldchurch Park went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the close-fitting parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther your Mercedes C-Class went, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us.

Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your misfuelled Audi A6, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps near St Augustine of Canterbury Church, and leave the restarting alone.

By this point that tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the filter, the lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Ford Kuga that made it close to Rush Green Community Centre needs the circuit flushed, not emptied.

Can our engineers reach your end of Rush Green?

Rush Green is a residential suburb, so we are out to the town and to anywhere near it on the usual trips: Romford, Becontree Heath, Elm Park, Chadwell Heath and Gidea Park.

There are dedicated pages for most locations in Greater London, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing at all about whether our technicians come. Close to the boundary, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Contact us and check rather than guessing.

Use this map for the patch covered on this page. The car never needs to move to us. We work across every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Rush Green: stuck where you pulled up

Not everyone finds a decent place to pull in. Set off, then twigged? Ended up along the verge beside Dagenham Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Stay with the car while it's sensible to be inside, but clear of it if it's not. Do not restart it to get to a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the fuel system. However awkward the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Run it already? Stop, then read this

under 5 miles from Rush Green, the local M25 is what counts here. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they come are normally lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Don't start it to move it. Come off at the next sensible exit and switch off. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It affects what we bring.

Rush Green itself

Rush Green is a suburban area in east London, situated near the River Thames at an elevation of around 14 metres. Rush Green lies approximately 13 miles from central London and is close to nearby places such as Romford, Becontree Heath, and Elm Park. Rush Green has a population of around 9191 people and is predominantly composed of flat housing.

What we do when our technicians reach you in Rush Green

  • The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.
  • The tainted fuel is drawn from your tank.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what created the issue, and so your fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • When it is started, we check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Rush Green is a separate matter

Do not crank it: that opening instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Rush Green page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Rush Green

One price would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Rush Green

Fuel drains on a Rush Green petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the vehicle off. Driving shifts the issue along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Still with the vehicle?

Never switch your engine on again.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
