Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rushacre? Don't Start It
Do not start the engine. If the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Rushacre and the rest of Pembrokeshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Contact us before all else starts, so you will know what follows after that.
Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start the vehicle. And having started, don't trust it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be as well: switching it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Redstone Road? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A difficult spot suits us better than a started diesel.
- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts SA67 7, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, approximately how much, and also if the car has started. These three details decide the full visit.
How many miles you travelled is what our technicians care about, not how long the car has been standing — and here's why. Diesel does two roles on its way through an engine: it burns, and before burning it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a quick refuel on the road in, the realisation coming at about eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane left outside Narberth since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were done with your pump labouring on a fluid stripped of a great deal of its protection. Call us then leave the car exactly where it stands.
The phone call our engineers hope for runs like this: diesel Peugeot 308, some litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now switched off outside CK Supermarkets. What we're truly asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.
Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and parked the diesel BMW 5 Series up close to Bloomfield House Community Centre a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Phone us then leave the vehicle off. The short drive truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has got to the fuel filter and your pump — which is why we flush your lines rather than only clearing your tank.
Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — by Sports Hall or anywhere at all. Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong.
No warning exists for this, which is why motors in that position usually get driven a second time before somebody calls. Do not be one of them. The throttle went soft and the idle turned ragged after a few streets, and your diesel Citroen C3 is now sitting by Narberth Library. Sluggishness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly instead of an engine giving up. Turn off. Ring us.
At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel
Forecourts are where the job usually starts, and where a fair chunk of that closes. We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you are still at Texaco that is usually where this drain happens.
At a garage, this is spotted with your motor never fired, and nowhere else does that. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines as well as that tank. That's still not a calamity, and we put it right where your car stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.
Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Well worth it. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.
Can we cover your end of Rushacre?
These same rounds carry us to Narberth, Stonyford, Narberth Bridge, Coxlake and Camp Hill along with Rushacre, which is a residential suburb.
If yours is not on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for most towns around Pembrokeshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Ring us and ask instead of presuming, particularly when you're on the border or somewhere the satnav misreads.
Check the map for the area included on this page. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of it needs the vehicle to move to us.
Roadside stops in Rushacre
The chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not fall to everyone. A common call for us instead of an odd one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge beside Redstone Court or at a lay-by with your hazards on.
Out of your car when it is not sensible to be in it, by it if it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. However awkward the spot, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for your car than pressing on.
Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles
This is where the M4 comes in — under 50 miles from Rushacre. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring alters.
All about Rushacre

Rushacre is also relatively distant from major cities, with London being around 198.8 miles away.
What follows when our engineers reach you around Rushacre
- We check what got in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
- We drain the tank of the tainted fuel.
- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
- After it's started, we check it runs properly on new diesel.
That leaves your car ready to set off. All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very rare.
AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Rushacre?
Never start it: that first rule stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.
Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Rushacre has its own page with the detail — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Rushacre?
Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what moves it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the car is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.
Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Rushacre motorists
I am on a forecourt in Rushacre. Can you drain the car here?
Yes, and it's where a big part of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more commonly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
There's no need to take it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.
Still with the vehicle?
Turned off is the way the car remains.
If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
