Petrol in Diesel

Rye: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Rye and the rest of East Sussex, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. One call to us will be enough: our technicians will tell you what happens from here. Do it first.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start the vehicle — and do not rely on it if it starts. That is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel usually just can't run, so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and pulls away quite happily for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It's wearing that fuel system while you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — your high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be too: switching it on is commonly enough to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into precisely those components.
  • Never add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Lion Street, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a motor that never moved.
  • Before you dial, have your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts TN31 7 — that's what settles whether the van turns up or circles.
  • Three facts decide the whole job: the fuel you poured in, the approximate measure involved, and if anything has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

The trip back would roughly double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already forced a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Volkswagen Passat. So keep the car where it sits. Phone us from the platform if that is simpler — nobody needs you standing over the vehicle at the nearest station while our engineers get it done, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

The parts that should be getting protected are wearing instead, and the motor gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and pulls away perfectly well. Risk the journey home from George Inn? No. Call us and leave the Mercedes E-Class where it stands.

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then ring us. Fine on the way out to Town Salts, flat on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Audi A3 travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

Leave the BMW 5 Series by Rye Castle Museum and ring us. We are firm about not driving on as a wearing pump gives off, and what it gives off moves downstream with your fuel to your injectors downstream.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, a ragged idle, rattling: that's a misfuelled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what's wrong. Do not restart the vehicle to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, by Clive Sawyer Gallery or anywhere else.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Rye

On the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

Pumps are where the work often begins, and where a good chunk of that finishes. We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, so if you're still at Murco that is usually where the drain takes place.

A filling station is the only place it can be caught before your motor has fired. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That's still not a disaster, and we deal with it where the car is. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Roll it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Places our vans cover in Rye

East Guldeford, Playden, Rye Harbour, Houghton Green, Bowlers Town — each of those on the runs that bring us out to Rye too, a coastal town.

Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and the majority of towns around East Sussex have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Call us and check instead of assuming, especially where you are on a border or anywhere your phone struggles with.

This map shows the patch the page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians serve, and none of it requires the vehicle to come to us.

Stuck by the kerbside near Rye

Not everybody gets the chance to stop anywhere suitable. Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge on High Street, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Wait by your car if it is sensible to sit inside, and out of it if it isn't. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered. A technician heading to a tricky place is no bother for us, and it is much better for your car than driving on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

The M20 is the road which counts now, and lies under 15 miles from Rye. A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the first safe exit, turn off, and don't start the car to move it. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in the van.

Where is Rye?

Rye is a small town on the coast of East Sussex, situated near the Kent border and approximately 53 miles from London. Rye sits on a hill overlooking the River Rother and the Romney Marshes, with its historic centre containing many preserved medieval buildings. Rye is surrounded by nearby places such as East Guldeford, Playden, and Rye Harbour, and its predominant housing stock consists of semi-detached homes.

Once we arrive with you around Rye: what happens

  • The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • The tainted fuel is drawn from your tank.
  • Our engineers purge the lines and clear the filter, so what is remaining in the system isn't what caused the trouble.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • After it's started, our engineers check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Rye?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the issue beneath it's a distinct one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Rye page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Rye

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much that tank takes.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. If it is not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Rye drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Rye. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a big share of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers visit JET and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It's recoverable far more commonly than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Keep it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car afterwards. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people fear, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
