Petrol in Diesel

Ryecroft: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. All over Ryecroft and the rest of South Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Our team shall tell you what the next move is. Call us — this goes ahead of anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Never start the vehicle. Turned on anyway? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for several miles. People get that backwards. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition off also. Diesel performs two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it protects the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which carries the petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Never water down it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never moved is the simplest one to sort, and we'd much rather come to an awkward place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Brunt Road, put your hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts S62 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has been turned over. Those answers determine all that follows.

Draining petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

It starts at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often the job wraps up at one too. Still at Shell? Then that is normally where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.

Before your motor has run — the forecourt is the one place this ends up caught. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and your lines as well as that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where your car is. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Staff will generally chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Take the offer. Firing it to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Ryecroft

We're in car parks like the one outside Heron Foods often, and it is hardly ever the fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height barrier at the entrance, which determines if a van can reach you at all. So say how hemmed in you are when you call, and which way the car is pointing. If there is no clearance to work next to that Renault Megane, our technicians shift it without the motor. That is not fuss over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of the tank on to the pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a better spot is quietly a harder job than one nobody touched.

Every restart primes the fuel lines and pulls more petrol past the filter and into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags by Rawmarsh Ryecroft Infant School is a hassle, while the same vehicle fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system and not a tank. A passer-by will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. Stay put, let people grumble, and give us a call.

Try the drive home from The Queens? No. It will fire up and it will move off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a diluted tank acts normally while wearing the parts your fuel should be protecting. Park the Dacia Duster then call us.

The smaller petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than sloppy. New spots see most of that for that reason. So: filled up close to Apollo Street Neighbourhood Centre without thinking, in a diesel Citroen C3 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone spots it, and mileage decides how much petrol gets to the injectors.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, the blend is in the filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Insignia that got close to Rosehill Park Leaf Sculpture needs your system purged, not cleared.

Service in Ryecroft

The same runs bring us to Sandhill, Rawmarsh, Piccadilly, Kilnhurst and Upper Haugh along with Ryecroft, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for nearly all towns around South Yorkshire, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from the list says nothing at all about if our technicians come. Phone and check instead of presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever the satnav might struggle with.

This map shows the patch this page includes. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory we cover, and none of it requires the car to come to us.

Ryecroft: broken down wherever you stopped

Not everybody gets a sensible spot to pull over. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on St Nicolas Road since you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Stay with your car while it is sensible to wait in it, but out of it when it is not. Never fire it up to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into the fuel system. Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult place, and that's no bother for us.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 5 miles from Ryecroft, the M18 is what counts now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and don't restart it to reposition. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

Ryecroft itself

Ryecroft is a suburban area situated near the River Don in South Yorkshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Ryecroft lies approximately 8 miles from Sheffield city centre and is close to nearby places such as Sandhill and Rawmarsh. Ryecroft has a population of around 6744 people and is located at an elevation of 60 metres above sea level. Ryecroft is also within commuting distance of major cities, with London being around 144.5 miles away.

Once our technicians get to you around Ryecroft: what follows

  • Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • The tainted fuel is pulled from the tank.
  • We clean the fuel lines and clear the filter, so what's left in the system is not what caused the issue.
  • Our technicians put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • Your engine is started and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to set off. Our engineers do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been noticed quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Ryecroft?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — while the fault underneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Ryecroft page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Ryecroft

One price wouldn't be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Ryecroft motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Ryecroft?

A big part of this work takes place there, so yes. We attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that blend pulled through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct issue. So no. The pump still has to live with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. This is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
