Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ryecroft? Don't Start It

With that tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. Across Ryecroft and the remainder of West Midlands, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. A single ring our way is enough: our team shall show you what follows next. Make this straight away.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start the vehicle — and don't trust it if it starts. This is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives away perfectly well for a few miles. It's not fine. It is eating into the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into just those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to thin it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Butts Road? Hazards on, then keep it there. A tricky place works for us better than a started diesel.
  • A van showing up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts WS4 2, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.
  • Three replies shape the entire call-out: the stuff you put in, the ballpark amount involved, and whether anything has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a quick refuel on the trip in, and the penny drops at about eleven — by that point your diesel Volkswagen Passat has been parked at Walsall for three hours. Phone and keep the vehicle precisely where it is. The run in is the bit that is key now, since diesel does two roles on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates its high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with the pump working on a liquid that had lost most of the protection it is built around — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you went, not how long your vehicle has been parked.

Each restart primes your lines and draws more petrol through the filter and into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags outside Butts Primary School is a hassle, whereas the same vehicle restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Someone will urge you to move the car out of that gateway and deal with it later. Do not. Stay put, let people grumble, and phone us.

It will fire up. It will drive off quite happily. That is the trouble, because a diesel on a weakened tank behaves usually while grinding the parts its fuel should be lubricating. So no, don't risk the journey home from Butts Tavern — leave the Nissan Qashqai and phone us.

The slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. Strange locations see most of that for that reason. So: filled up near Walsall Seventh-Day Adventist Church without thinking, in a diesel Volvo XC60 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone notices, and mileage determines how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

A person certain will tell you to drain the vehicle and put clean diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Renault Captur close to William 'Billy' Meikle and the engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there's petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is draw it back through the pump once more. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Call us. Your circuit gets flushed, the fuel filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired motor from one that just starts.

Removing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

Plenty of the job starts at a pump, so a big chunk of it is done there. If you're still on the forecourt at Tesco, that's typically where the drain gets done — we operate on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

Before the motor has run — a garage is the single location the mistake gets spotted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Accept the help. Cranking the car for four car lengths? Don't.

Can our engineers cover your corner of Ryecroft?

Being a residential suburb, Ryecroft gets a steady call, whilst the villages close by go along on that same round: Walsall and Birchills, Coal Pool and The Chuckery, Caldmore.

There are pages for the majority of towns around West Midlands, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list tells you nothing at all about if we come. Ring us to ask instead of assuming — boundaries above all, and wherever your satnav may get wrong.

The area the page includes sits on our map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of that is territory we serve, and none of that requires your vehicle to travel to us.

Stuck by the kerb anywhere in Ryecroft?

Not everybody has a safe spot to stop. Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge of William Street, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards going? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you sit by the vehicle or move away from it turns on whether staying nearby seems safe. Don't start up your engine to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into your fuel system. However difficult the place, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the car than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Your M6 is the one that matters now, and lies under 3 miles from Ryecroft. Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in our van.

The visit around Ryecroft, step by step

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.
  • Out goes the contaminated fuel.
  • What is left in the system should not be what caused the issue, and so the lines get purged and the filter cleaned.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • After it's fired up, our engineers check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do all of this wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted soon, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ryecroft is a separate matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — while the problem underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Ryecroft has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.

Ryecroft costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We can't put one price on this page frankly, since the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much that tank can hold.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Ryecroft motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt in Ryecroft. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it is where a big share of this work happens. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's consent our technicians work at Essar and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more commonly than people fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. The pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Don't switch the car back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Ryecroft and throughout West Midlands.
