Ryelands: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch the engine on, even briefly, to shift the car. Pause; leave the car off. Cleared and rinsed, just where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that straightforward rests on the minutes ahead far more than on everything else. From here on, in order, wherever you are in Ryelands:

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

Work through these in sequence, first.

  • Take your keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime your fuel system, pulling petrol out of your tank to precisely the components it damages, so leave the car off entirely.
  • A bigger tank of the same mixture is all topping up gives you, since it takes out nothing. So no more diesel.
  • Visibility comes first near moving traffic: switch the hazards on, and only then deal with anything else.
  • The attendants will normally help you roll it away from the petrol pump. Let them, then move it by hand — never on your engine, even for a few yards.
  • Which fuel, and roughly how much? Your receipt replies both, and that's where our questions start. Never bin it.

If you were still driving when you noticed, pull over somewhere safe rather than pushing on for the services — on the M6, under 3 miles from Ryelands, that means the next junction. Stage one follows.

The fork in every Ryelands fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

Motor not run at all?

  • Nowhere but your tank: that's where that petrol yet is.
  • Normally it is drained and cleaned right where the car is.
  • This is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of stage one.

Run at all, even for a second:

  • The fuel lines and your filter now carry petrol pulled from your tank.
  • A bigger run takes it right through to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.
  • Miles is what makes it a bigger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump and your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. In the tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing. As soon as it's pumped, petrol starts grinding whatever moves it.

Ryelands, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

A technician that circles versus a van that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.

  • The best place to start is a postcode — one beginning LA1 2 — for where you are.
  • The street or the car park. A road name helps — Saint Chad's Drive, or wherever you have stopped.
  • Or the landmark. A car park is easier to find by what it serves, like the one outside Spar.
  • The make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it's a diesel.
  • Which got in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, plus Ryelands has a page for it. So say.
  • The amount: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you held the nozzle in.
  • Whether it has run. Then if it has, how far plus how heavily.
  • The owner may have to approve the work under some hire or company agreements — which is why it is faster to settle whose car it is before our technicians arrive.

The wait for a Ryelands fuel drain, and what to do in it

Stick to these: well-intended help causes the harm during the wait.

  • Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it is, stay with it.
  • Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.
  • None of it gets that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.
  • No DIY emptying. Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is hazardous, and it leaves the fuel that has by now gone beyond your tank.
  • Even your radio or the windows aren't worth turning the ignition on for.

Step by step: the fuel drain when the van arrives

  • First, three queries: which fuel went in, the volume, and has it run? Those replies decide this job, and so the quote follows them.
  • The tank is cleared. The polluted mix comes out of the tank.
  • Petrol that has moved beyond that tank travels in the fuel lines if it ran, and the fuel lines are rinsed to clear it.
  • Cleaned, or changed if your car has a workable one: the fuel filter is sorted next.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and the fuel system is primed.
  • The first start on new diesel. When priming is finished, the engine is fired up and we confirm that it runs correctly.

Until it runs on new diesel, our technicians remain with it. Permanent damage is very rare if it has been spotted early, so the vehicle can go straight back to normal driving.

Back on the road in Ryelands after the fuel drain

  • Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do once it's been started on clean fuel.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over then call us back.
  • Keep the documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
  • The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
