Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Salesbury? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Salesbury and the rest of Lancashire. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. While the motor has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Phone before all else starts, and you'll know what follows from there.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for several miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And once started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: flicking it on is usually sufficient to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to handle, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Saint Peters Close? Hazards on, and keep it there. A tricky place suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you call, get your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting BB1 9 — that's what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Three answers decide the whole visit: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate volume of it, and whether anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Removing petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

Plenty of the job begins at a pump, which means a large portion of it gets completed on site. The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's agreement, that is somewhere our engineers work, and routinely.

At the forecourt, it gets spotted with your motor never started, and nowhere else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the assistance. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Salesbury

If you have put petrol in the diesel Peugeot 308 in Salesbury and you are now stranded at Co-Op at the Bull's Head with a boot full of shopping, phone us. Do not start the car once more to get out of that spot. We will come to you, drain your tank, rinse those fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at light throttle draws very little of it, which is why such jobs are usually the simple ones.

Hazards on. Motor off. Phone. It is twenty to nine at the gates of Salesbury Church of England Primary School, you are late, and the till receipt shows unleaded — and although three miles in your Audi A4 sounds like nothing, fuel is delivered on demand, and a rushed dash needs plenty of that.

Nothing gets worse while it sits. Whatever your diesel BMW 5 Series did on the way to Salesbury Cricket Club, it's doing none of that now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Clearing your Vauxhall Astra, changing your filter where there is a usable one, cleaning the lines, putting clean fuel through the entire circuit: that's this job, and it's shaped by the worst of that resting in the lines rather than in your tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from near Saint Peter — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park beside without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and so the spot itself is rarely the trouble. A narrow parking spot trumps a car driven somewhere more convenient.

By this point the tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Renault Captur that got by Trinity Church needs the system purged, not cleared.

Salesbury plus the villages near it

These same runs carry us to Clayton-le-Dale, Wilpshire, Copster Green, Ramsgreave and Brownhill along with Salesbury, which is a residential suburb.

We still come. Those names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations in Lancashire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near the border, or anywhere your satnav can't find? Call us and ask rather than assuming.

Look at the map for the patch covered on this page. The lot is territory our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not drive your car anywhere.

Broken down at the roadside around Salesbury

Some people have no suitable place to pull over whatsoever. A routine call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, finished up on the verge beside Ribchester Road or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Sit with your car if it is sensible to wait inside, and clear of the vehicle when it's not. Don't start up your engine to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into your fuel system. However inconvenient the location, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has rolled

under 5 miles out of Salesbury, your M65 is what counts here. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never start it to reposition. Get off at the first safe exit and switch off. On a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what our engineers bring.

A bit about Salesbury

Salesbury is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated approximately 8.8 miles north of Preston and 186.3 miles northwest of London. Salesbury sits at an elevation of around 140 metres, amidst the rolling countryside of the North West region. Salesbury is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is located near other small communities such as Clayton-le-Dale and Wilpshire.

What our technicians do when our technicians get to you around Salesbury

  • Our engineers check what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • Away goes the contaminated fuel.
  • We clean the lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in the system isn't what started the trouble.
  • The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • Our engineers start the car and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted soon, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Salesbury?

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — do not crank it — but this issue isn't. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Salesbury has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Salesbury

We cannot put one number on this page honestly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank can hold.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Salesbury motorists

At a petrol station in Salesbury, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's consent our engineers attend SPAR Pennine Service Station and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more frequently than motorists assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, since we drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Never switch the engine on again.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
