What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Salisbury
Whatever you do, never switch the motor on, even for a moment, to move the car. Stop; leave the car off. The coming few minutes settle it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun usually amounts to draining then cleaning, on the spot. Here's the sequence of things from here, anywhere you're in Salisbury.
Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel
In this order, and before anything else:
- The keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be enough to prime your fuel system, and priming pulls petrol out of your tank toward the parts it harms. Keep the vehicle off completely.
- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of that petrol — it just makes you with extra of the same blend.
- Visibility comes first near moving traffic: switch the hazard lights on, and only then deal with everything else.
- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the attendants to help you push the car away from the pump. Do not fire it up to move it, however short the distance.
- Keep the till receipt. It shows which fuel was put in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we will ask.
Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M27 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 15 miles from Salisbury, and pull over somewhere safe instead of pressing on to the services. Then start at step one.
Salisbury fuel drain: has the engine run yet, or not?
Everything after this point depends on one answer.
If your engine hasn't run at all:
- All the petrol remains in your tank, and just there.
- The work is a drain and a flush, normally done where your car is.
- This is the best case — which is the whole point of step one.
If your engine has run, even briefly:
- The lines and the fuel filter already hold petrol pulled out of that tank.
- The high-pressure fuel pump as well as the fuel injectors see it too on a longer run.
- The job grows with the distance — lines flushed, filter dealt with, sometimes more.
Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling the pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does. Nothing is harmed by petrol that is just waiting in a tank. Petrol being pumped is grinding down the components that move the vehicle.
Calling about petrol in a diesel from Salisbury: what to have prepared
Get ready a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.
- Where you are. A postcode starting SP1 1 is the best start.
- A road name is a help: Chipper Lane, say, or whatever street you have stopped in. A car park works too.
- Or the landmark. A car park is easier to find by what it serves, like the one outside Sainsbury's.
- That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of your car.
- Which got in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Salisbury has a page for it. So say.
- Roughly how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.
- The mileage it covered, and how heavily, if it ran at all.
- The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire and company agreements — which is why it is quicker to settle whose car it is before our technicians arrive.
Phone 0333 366 0103 once you've got that together — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .
Salisbury fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait
The wait is where well-meant help does the harm. Hold to these.
- Where the car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of your car.
- No one — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move your car a short way.
- Something from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.
- Draining it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond the tank stays put all the same.
- Keep your ignition off — your windows and your radio included.
Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time
- Fuel, volume, whether it has run: those replies set this job, and that's why we give a price after them instead of before.
- Out of your tank comes the tainted blend: the tank is emptied.
- Your lines are rinsed. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond the tank, and the lines are carrying it.
- Cleaned, or swapped if the vehicle has a usable one: the fuel filter is dealt with next.
- Fresh diesel goes in, then your system is primed.
- The first start on fresh diesel. When bleeding is finished, the motor is started and our engineers check that it runs properly.
Till it runs on new diesel, our engineers stay with it. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon, so the car can go straight back to normal use.
Back on the road around Salisbury after your fuel drain
- Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do once it's been started on fresh fuel.
- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then call us back.
- Your paperwork covers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.
- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
