Petrol in Diesel

Saltley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still in the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Saltley or the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Contact us and we will tell you what follows from here before you do any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • As you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. That is why you do not crank it, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point motorists get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: switching it on is usually enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into precisely those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to handle, and our team would much rather travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Hartopp Road, put those hazards on then leave the car there.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts B8 3, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how much, and also if the motor has fired. Those three details shape the entire call-out.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that high-pressure pump in real quantity on the road in, and the drive back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Passat outside Adderley Park while the work goes on, and we'd far rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it passes through, and petrol weakens it. That is the entire mechanism, and it accounts for the normal Alexander Park call: a diesel Ford Focus that travelled out there without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when your fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts escaping past gaps instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. None of that is the engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is corrected.

The pump rests upstream of the injectors, and so whatever a wearing one gives off moves on with your fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Call us, and leave your diesel Mercedes C-Class where it's near Church of Our lady of the Rosary and St Therese.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some contracts want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than later on. Then phone us about the Peugeot 208, the diesel one, by Zia ul Quran Jamia Mosque. Don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was — almost nobody can two days into a motor, and it's something our engineers check there. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

What happens next is the issue. The engine straight away draws the petrol left resting in your filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put clean diesel in, someone certain will tell you — and that tip is half true, because do it to a diesel Citroen C3 parked up, Emanuel Church say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush your circuit and take the filter off where the car has a serviceable one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being repaired and your car just starting.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work begins at a pump, which means a large chunk of it is done there. If you are still on the forecourt at Gulf, that is typically where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission.

Nowhere except a garage can it be spotted with your engine still unstarted. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key.

The staff will generally happily push the car out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing. Shifting it four lengths does not warrant cranking the motor.

Areas we serve near Saltley

Saltley is a residential suburb, so our technicians get out to the town and to the areas around it on the same trips: Washwood Heath, Vauxhall, Bordesley Green, Little Bromwich and Ward End.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and nearly all towns in West Midlands have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Ring us and ask rather than presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever your satnav tends to struggle with.

The map shows the area the page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is ground we serve, and none of it asks the car to come to us.

Saltley: broken down where you parked

Some drivers get no suitable place to pull in whatsoever. If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge beside College Gate, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Out of the vehicle while it isn't sensible to sit in it, beside it if it is. Don't fire up the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the fuel system. However inconvenient the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's much better for your car than carrying on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The M6 is the one which counts now, and it lies under 3 miles from Saltley. A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never start the vehicle to move it. Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

Saltley itself

Saltley is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated on the River Rea and close to the centre of Birmingham. Saltley sits at an elevation of around 117 metres, with its riverside location influencing the local landscape. Saltley is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock, which reflects the area's historical development as a residential suburb of Birmingham. Saltley is also near to other local areas, including Washwood Heath, Vauxhall, and Bordesley Green.

The call-out around Saltley, step by step

  • We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • The tank is drained completely.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • We pour new diesel in and bleed the system.
  • Once it's fired up, we check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. We do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted soon, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Saltley

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the issue under it is a distinct one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal around Saltley has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. We handle both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Saltley?

What moves the figure is set out below, because the job isn't one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Saltley drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Saltley?

A big portion of this work happens there, so yes. We visit Texaco and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the car?

That engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
