Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Samuels Corner

With that tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. All over Samuels Corner and the remainder of Essex, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Just one ring to us is enough: we can explain what comes after this. Make that first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Don't start the vehicle. Fired up all the same? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally can't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Drivers get that backwards. It isn't okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition remains off too — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for exactly those parts.
  • Never add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we would much rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Morrins Close, switch those hazards on then leave it there.
  • Get your position ready before you dial. A postcode beginning SS3 0 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, approximately how much, plus if your car has run. These three replies settle the entire job.

Quarter past eight. A quick fill on the drive in. Around eleven it dawns on you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has sat at Shoeburyness for three hours. Phone then keep it where it sits. What counts is the trip in, because diesel both burns and — before that — lubricates the pump and the fuel injectors, while petrol only ever ignites. Those few miles ran the pump on a liquid drained of a great deal of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the question about distance instead of hours sitting, and hence the request to leave the keys be until we turn up.

The call our engineers like sounds like this: diesel Nissan Qashqai, some litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now shut off at Asda. What we're truly asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and generally it will not run, so the person stops there and the harm stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine fires up, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection the fuel is supposed to be supplying. That is the catch, and it is why the diesel Ford Focus will have felt entirely ordinary coming back from Great Wakering Primary Academy. They all do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing tells you. Phone with roughly how far you went, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

You drive off at the end, once our technicians have fired it up and checked it runs smoothly on new diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park outside The Waeccer, the tainted fuel comes out of your tank, the lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when our engineers get to the car: what was put in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle uneven, and the diesel Peugeot 208 is parked up by Great Wakering Memorial Hall. Your engine isn't giving up — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so vehicles like yours normally get driven a second time before anybody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and ring us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Samuels Corner

Can petrol be drained from a diesel at a forecourt?

A large part of the work gets finished at a pump, because that's where it often starts. If you are still on the forecourt at Asda, that's normally where this drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission.

At a forecourt, this is caught with the engine never fired, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where your car stands.

The attendants will normally help you wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Samuels Corner and the villages near it

Those same rounds carry us to Cupids Corner, Great Wakering, Suttons, Little Wakering and North Shoebury besides Samuels Corner, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns across Essex, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours. On a boundary, or somewhere your phone can't find? Call us to enquire rather than guessing.

This map marks the patch this page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is territory our engineers serve, and none of it needs your car to travel to us.

Kerbside stops across Samuels Corner

Not everyone gets the opportunity to stop somewhere safe. A common call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge on Stairs Road or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Remain by the motor when it is safe to sit inside, and out of the car if it's not. Never restart your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the fuel system. We'll take our van to an awkward location without any trouble, and for your car that is much better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 25 miles out of Samuels Corner, the local M2 is what matters here. A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they come are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and never start the vehicle to reposition. On a longer run — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what we bring.

Samuels Corner itself

Samuels Corner is a small suburban area located on the coast of Essex, with an elevation of around 5 metres above sea level. Samuels Corner sits near the city of Southend-on-Sea, approximately 4.8 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Cupids Corner and Great Wakering. Samuels Corner has a population of around 658 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing.

Once our technicians get to you in Samuels Corner: what we do

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The tainted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
  • We rinse your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in the system isn't what caused the issue.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • Once it is fired up, our technicians check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to set off. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and since everything is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Samuels Corner AdBlue removal is a separate matter

Do not fire it up: that opening rule applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Samuels Corner page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Samuels Corner

What changes the figure is laid out below, because the job is not one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from Samuels Corner drivers

At a petrol station in Samuels Corner, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this gets done. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more often than motorists assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate fault. So no. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

Standing next to it?

Never turn your engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people assume, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.
