Petrol in Diesel

Sandhill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. Across Sandhill and the rest of South Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Our team will show you what the following stage is. Phone — that comes before anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And once started, never believe it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Leave the ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Rose Crescent, anywhere — an odd place for us beats a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting S62 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what got in, approximately how many litres, and whether the car has been turned over. Your responses determine whatever follows.

Don't take it home. The drive in has already put a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Tiguan, and the journey back would more or less double it for no gain at all. Ring us from the platform if that's easier. Our engineers don't need you standing over the car outside Swinton (South Yorks) whilst our engineers get on, and we would much rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

It will start. It will drive off perfectly well. That's the trouble, since a diesel on a weakened tank behaves usually whilst wearing down the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, never chance the drive home from The Queens — leave the Mercedes C-Class then call us.

Why we are direct about not driving on: the pump sits upstream of your injectors, and so whatever a wearing pump sheds passes on with the fuel. Leave the BMW X1 by Apollo Street Neighbourhood Centre then call us.

The narrower petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of slapdash. Unfamiliar places see most of it for that reason. So: filled up near St Nicolas without thinking, in a diesel Citroen C3 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone spots it, and miles decides how much petrol gets to your injectors.

No warning light exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody calls. Don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and the idle turned ragged after a few streets, and the diesel Vauxhall Insignia is now waiting close to Rosehill Park Leaf Sculpture. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure fully instead of a motor giving up. Turn off. Ring us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Sandhill

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the work usually begins, and where a fair portion of that closes. Our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, so if you are still at Shell that's typically where this drain gets done.

The forecourt is the only place this can be spotted before the engine has started. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key.

Wheel the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Starting it just to move four car lengths is not.

Can our technicians cover your part of Sandhill?

Sandhill is a residential suburb, and so our technicians go out to it and to the areas near it on the usual trips: Ryecroft, Piccadilly, Kilnhurst, Rawmarsh and Abdy.

There are pages for nearly all places in South Yorkshire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list says nothing about whether we come. On a boundary, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Ring us and check instead of presuming.

The area the page includes appears on our map. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Stranded by the kerbside somewhere in Sandhill?

Not everybody finds a suitable place to stop. Set off, then noticed? Landed on the verge on Dickens Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Out of your car if it is not safe to wait in it, with it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However awkward the spot, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

under 5 miles out of Sandhill, the local M18 is what matters now. Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.

Sandhill itself

Sandhill is a suburban area located on the riverside in South Yorkshire, with an elevation of 59 metres and situated approximately 8.3 miles from Sheffield. Sandhill sits near several nearby places, including Ryecroft, Piccadilly, and Kilnhurst, and is characterized by its predominant semi-detached housing. Sandhill is part of the larger Sheffield urban area, with the city centre being a short distance away. Sandhill is also relatively close to the national motorway network, with London being around 144.5 miles to the south.

Our visit around Sandhill, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
  • The contaminated mixture is drawn out of that tank.
  • Our engineers flush the lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the problem.
  • We pour new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • After it is fired up, our engineers confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Sandhill?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this fault under it is a distinct one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Sandhill page. Both are ours to deal with.

Sandhill pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is set out below, as the job is not one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank takes.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from Sandhill motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Sandhill?

A large portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Shut off is how the car stays.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from far more often than people fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
