Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sandy

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Sandy or the remainder of Carmarthenshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Just one call to us will be plenty: we will show you what happens next. Make this first.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That is why you do not crank it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point most people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition stays off too — switch it on and you usually prime the system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for exactly those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Our team would sooner drive to a tricky location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on Sandy Roundabout, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Before you phone, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts SA15 4 — that is what settles whether the van arrives or circles.
  • Three details settle the whole call-out: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark volume of it, and if it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that high-pressure fuel pump in real volume on the road in, and the way back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is good. There is no need to stand over that Volkswagen Golf outside Llanelli whilst the work happens, and we would much rather hear from you tonight than discover on Monday.

How much fuel your pump has pulled is what we're actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry our engineers hope for runs like this: diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now switched off outside Kubuś Polski Centrum.

Three answers settle much of the work: what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them when we get to your car in the car park outside The Sandpiper. Next the polluted mix comes out of the tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. When fresh diesel is in and the fuel system bled, our engineers start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before you set off.

Our technicians flush your lines rather than only emptying the tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already reached your filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance genuinely helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked up by Frankie's Kitchen a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor giving up — and with no warning for it, cars in that position typically get driven again before anyone rings. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Skoda Superb now resting by Selwyn Samuel Centre. Switch the vehicle off and call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Sandy

Removing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Much of the work begins at a pump, meaning a good portion of it gets finished on site. We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent, and so if you're still at Asda that is typically where this drain happens.

Nowhere other than a garage can the mistake be caught with the engine still cold. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key.

The attendants will normally offer to roll the car out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Do our engineers cover your part of Sandy?

Llanelli, Furnace, Mount Pleasant, Wern, Seaside — all of these on the rounds that carry us over to Sandy too, a residential suburb.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and nearly all places around Carmarthenshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Near a border, or anywhere your satnav struggles with? Ring us and ask rather than presuming.

That map shows the patch the page includes. The vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We work throughout all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped at the kerbside anywhere in Sandy?

The chance to pull in anywhere suitable does not fall to everyone. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge of A484, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Sit beside the car when it's safe to sit inside, yet out of the car if it isn't. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: restart the car to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile covered. We'll bring our van to a difficult place without any bother, and for your car that is much better than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

The M4 is the road that counts now, and runs under 10 miles from Sandy. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the first safe junction, turn off, and never restart the car to reposition. Long drive? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

Sandy itself

Sandy is a coastal suburban area in Carmarthenshire, situated near the cities of Swansea and Llanelli. Sandy sits at a low elevation of around 7 metres, close to the shores of the Bristol Channel. Sandy is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the residential development of the area. Sandy is part of the wider Swansea Bay urban landscape, with nearby communities including Furnace and Mount Pleasant.

What our technicians do when we get to you around Sandy

  • The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • The polluted mixture is drawn from your tank.
  • What is left in your system should not be what started the problem, so the lines get flushed and your filter cleaned.
  • The system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running correctly.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Sandy

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is the same — do not fire it up — yet this problem is not. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and deposits instead.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Sandy page. Both are ours to handle.

Sandy costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One price wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the big one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank holds.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Sandy drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt in Sandy. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians work at Texaco and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and keep it off. Driving takes the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with the vehicle?

Keep the car turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later. Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
