Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Saxton? Don't Start It

If you have not started the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Saxton or the rest of North Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Phone and our team shall explain what happens after that before you do much else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Do not start the car. Fired up regardless? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally will not run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Most people get that confused. It's not okay — that fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel does two tasks: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is often enough to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of the tank then into exactly those components.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it just gives you a fuller tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Our team would much rather get to a difficult location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to handle than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Main Street, that means hazards on then leave it.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning LS24 9, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has started. Those three replies settle your whole visit.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Most of the work starts at the pump, which means a fair part of it ends up finished at one. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at Sunset Garage that's normally where this drain happens.

Nowhere else other than a forecourt can this be caught with your engine still cold. Our technicians can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Attendants will normally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the help. Starting the car over four car lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Saxton

Diesel Volkswagen Passat. Some litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Turned off now, at Co-op Food. That is the enquiry our technicians like, because the real question under it's about amount through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

Hazards on. Motor off. Call us. It is twenty to nine at the gates of Saxton Church of England Primary School, you are late, and your receipt shows unleaded — and although three miles in your BMW 3 Series seems like nothing, fuel gets delivered on demand, and a hurried drive asks for plenty of that.

Three answers determine much of the work: what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we get to the vehicle in the car park outside The Greyhound. Then the tainted mixture comes out of the tank, the fuel lines are rinsed, and where your Audi A4 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once new diesel is in and the system primed, we start the engine and check it runs properly before you pull away.

Knocking? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your wrongly fuelled Vauxhall Astra, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly by Saxton Village Hall, then leave the restarting alone.

By this point the tank is not where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Mercedes A-Class that made it by St. Mary's Chapel needs the circuit cleared, not drained.

Areas we cover around Saxton

Saxton is a rural village, and our vans head out to the town and to the places near it on the same trips: Scarthingwell, Barkston Ash, Lotherton, Towton and Sherburn in Elmet.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of places in North Yorkshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from this list tells you nothing whatsoever about if we come. Phone to ask instead of presuming — county lines particularly, and wherever your phone can misread.

The ground this page spans is on this map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory we serve, and none of it asks your vehicle to move to us.

Broken down by the roadside in Saxton

Not everyone finds a suitable place to pull in. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Dam Lane as you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Fine where you are? Remain beside it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it. Do not restart the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into your fuel system. Our van coming to a difficult spot is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for the car than pressing on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

This is where your Aberford By-Pass matters, under 3 miles from Saxton. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are generally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Take the next junction that's safe, pull up there, and do not restart it to reposition. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what we bring.

Saxton itself

Saxton is a small village in North Yorkshire, situated inland at an elevation of 29 metres, approximately 11 miles from Leeds. Saxton has a population of around 566 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Saxton is located near other local places such as Scarthingwell, Barkston Ash, and Lotherton, and is about 167 miles north of London.

Our call-out around Saxton, step by step

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • We empty your tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • Our engineers purge the lines and clean your filter, so what is remaining in your system is not what created the trouble.
  • We pour clean diesel in and bleed the system.
  • We turn it on and make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Saxton

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor stays off — while the issue under it is a separate one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Saxton page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Saxton

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Saxton drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt in Saxton. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens. Our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable far more regularly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Switched off is the way it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. This is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers assume, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.
