Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Scoonie?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Scoonie and the rest of Fife. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While your engine has not been started and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Just one call to us is plenty: our team will explain what follows from here. Make this first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Do not start the vehicle. Fired up anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a few miles. Drivers get that backwards. It isn't okay — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Flicking your ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to sort, and we would rather drive to an odd spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Cupar Road, put your hazards on then leave it there.
  • Before you call, work out your location. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting KY8 5 — that is what determines whether the van arrives or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how much, and if the motor has run. Those three details shape the entire job.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Running it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has put real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return journey would close to double the figure to no gain. The Renault Clio can wait at Leven perfectly well. Ring from the platform if easier; standing over us whilst our engineers work isn't needed.

Shift the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later — that's what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags outside the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled diesel Dacia Duster is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Started three more times for politeness, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, because priming happens with every start and more petrol goes through the filter towards the pump. Let everyone complain. Ring us.

A diesel Peugeot 3008 in the car park outside The Scoonie Tavern holding a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till somebody takes it home. Park the vehicle there overnight then ring us in the morning. Nothing deteriorates while it waits. What our technicians will want to know is whether the drive there was short and cold, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and what doesn't burn can work past the piston rings then into the sump.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a ragged idle, knocking: that is a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what's wrong. Do not restart the vehicle to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, close to Leven Mercat Cross or anywhere else.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle ragged, and your diesel Kia Sportage is parked up close to Parish of Scoonie WW1 War Memorial. Your engine is not packing up — that sluggishness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so vehicles like yours generally get driven a second time before anybody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and ring us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Scoonie

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where this job mostly begins, and where a big chunk of it closes. If you are still on the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that's typically where this drain gets done — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent.

Before the motor has fired — the forecourt is the one spot the mistake is caught. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines along with your tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians deal with it where your car sits. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

The staff will normally offer to roll the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. It is worth doing. Firing the car for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Areas we reach in Scoonie

As a residential suburb, Scoonie sees a regular call, and the villages nearby go along on that same round: Sillerhole and Broom, Leven Links and Leven, Innerleven.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns across Fife, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours. Phone and ask rather than assuming, especially when you are on the border or anywhere a satnav can't find.

This map is the patch this page covers. Your vehicle never needs to come to us. We work across every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped at the roadside anywhere in Scoonie?

Not everyone gets a chance to stop anywhere suitable. Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge beside Largo Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Fine there? Sit with it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it. Do not restart the engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system. Pressing on does the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to an inconvenient place, and that is no problem for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and your car has gone

This is where the M90 counts, under 15 miles from Scoonie. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are typically a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of it on a long drive. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring differs.

All about Scoonie

Scoonie is a coastal suburban area in Fife, situated near the towns of Leven and Methil, with Sillerhole and Broom to the east. Scoonie has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and the area is relatively low-lying at around 21 metres above sea level. Scoonie is close to the Leven Links and looks out over the Firth of Forth, with the city of Dundee a short distance to the north. Scoonie is a relatively small community, with a population of around 3078 people.

Our job around Scoonie, step by step

  • We check what went in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • The tainted fuel comes out of that tank.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what created the trouble, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Your system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That has the car ready to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Scoonie is a different matter

The problem isn't the same, though the first rule is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal in Scoonie has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. We handle both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Scoonie

What shifts the figure is listed below, since the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Things we get about petrol in diesel around Scoonie

Fuel drains on a Scoonie petrol station forecourt

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement we visit Shell and the other forecourts locally all the time.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Still with the vehicle?

Shut off is how the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later. This is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
