Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Seafield

Don't start the motor. While the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not run, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Seafield and the remainder of South Ayrshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Our team shall tell you what the following stage will be. Call us — that happens ahead of all else.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And having started, never rely on it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition alone too: flicking it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice assumes — so never pour diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd much rather get to a tricky place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort out than a motor that has never moved. On the verge on Carwinshoch View, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts KA7 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the car has been turned over. The responses shape whatever comes after.

Quarter past eight. A hurried top-up on the road in. Somewhere around eleven it dawns on you, and by then your diesel Renault Megane has waited outside Ayr for three hours. Call us then leave it where it is. What matters is the journey in, since diesel both ignites and — before that — lubricates your pump and your injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those few miles worked your pump on a liquid stripped of most of its protection, and no quantity of standing in a car park puts any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about distance instead of hours sitting, and hence the request to leave your keys alone until our engineers arrive.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both ready. The Nissan Qashqai will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that's the trap. Diesel into a petrol car mostly will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, drives off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, as behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the precision parts that are meant to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Mercedes C-Class travelled, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that trip to Old Racecourse went, then, and your tank is where to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off and phone us.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you phone us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later on. Then ring us about the Peugeot 208 close to Ayr Lawn Tennis Club, and don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a vehicle they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Cleared, not drained — that's what a diesel Kia Sportage which got as far as Ayr Wattfield Bowling Club needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into the filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, and so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

A large part of this work is finished at a forecourt, because that is where it usually starts. Still at BP? Then that is usually where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before your engine has fired — the forecourt is the one setting the mistake is caught. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Will our technicians cover your corner of Seafield?

Seafield is a residential suburb, and our team head out to the town and to the areas by it on the same trips: Belleisle, Ayr, Doonfoot, Alloway and Belmont.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of towns in South Ayrshire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list tells you nothing about if our technicians come. Guessing is the thing to avoid, above all on a border or anywhere a satnav gets lost. Phone to enquire.

Check the map for the ground included here. All of it is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never drive your vehicle anywhere.

Stuck by the roadside in Seafield

Not everyone gets the opportunity to stop anywhere sensible. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Auchentrae Crescent as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you wait by the vehicle or move away from it depends on whether staying there feels sensible. Don't restart your motor to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system. However tricky the location, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that's far better for the car than driving on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Your M77 is the road that matters here, and sits under 25 miles from Seafield. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the first safe junction, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. Suppose the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

About Seafield

Seafield is a small coastal suburban area in South Ayrshire, situated near the towns of Ayr and Doonfoot. Seafield has a low elevation of around 4 metres, reflecting its coastal setting. Seafield is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, which is typical of many suburban areas in Scotland. Seafield is located near several nearby places, including Belleisle and Ayr, and is within commuting distance of Glasgow.

What our technicians do when our technicians get to you in Seafield

  • The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
  • Out flows the contaminated fuel.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the issue, so the fuel lines get purged and the filter cleaned.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Seafield is a distinct job

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is the same — never start it — but the issue isn't. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal in Seafield has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Seafield?

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, as this job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Where your car is, and whether a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range. If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Seafield drivers

Fuel drains on a Seafield petrol station forecourt

A good share of this work happens there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our engineers answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend sucked through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more often than drivers expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Never switch the car on again.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car stay that way. Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfuelled cars, Seafield and the rest of South Ayrshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
