Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Seven Stars

With the tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet started, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Seven Stars and the remainder of Lancashire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. One ring our way is enough: our team will tell you what happens after this. Make that right away.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not fire it up. And if started, never rely on it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: turning it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay still if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Grove Street, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a car that never moved.
  • Keep your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode starting PR25 1 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between a van arriving and the van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, approximately how many litres, and also if your car has fired. These three answers settle your whole job.

The drive back would roughly double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already pushed a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Renault Megane. So keep it where it is. Call us from the platform if that's quicker — nobody needs you hovering over your car outside Leyland while we get it done, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

A diesel pump meters fuel to demand, and a frantic morning dash demands plenty — so three miles in the Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine at the gates of St Anne's Catholic Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone.

Three replies settle much of the work: what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we arrive at the car in the car park outside Old Original Seven Stars. Next the contaminated mix comes out of your tank, the fuel lines are flushed, and where your Audi A4 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the system bled, we start the engine and confirm it runs correctly before you set off.

None of that is your engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary Worden Sports College Recreation Ground call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Ford Focus drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it passes through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built escapes past gaps, delivery turns up weaker and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is corrected.

Ringing from near Lowerhouse Community Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for a van next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself hardly counts: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a narrow space than a motor someone has driven somewhere simpler. Then it is a drain for the Dacia Duster, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines cleaned, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in your lines and not the tank.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Seven Stars

Can petrol be drained from your diesel at the forecourt?

Pumps are where this job usually begins, and where a big share of it ends. Still at Tesco? Then that is typically where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the site.

Nowhere but a forecourt can it be spotted with the motor still unrun. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the offer. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

Seven Stars plus the places next to it

The same rounds carry us to Wade Hall, Lower House, The Straits, Broadfield and Moss Side besides Seven Stars, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations in Lancashire, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours. Ring us and ask rather than guessing, especially if you're on a boundary or somewhere a satnav misreads.

That map shows the patch this page spans. All of it is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not move the vehicle anywhere.

Stopped on the kerb somewhere around Seven Stars?

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull in anywhere suitable. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Mill Street as you noticed after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Clear of your car if it isn't sensible to be in it, with it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. A van driving to a difficult spot is no bother for us, and it's far better for the car than driving on.

Driven it already? Stop, and see below

This is where your M6 counts, under 3 miles away from Seven Stars. A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

Seven Stars itself

Seven Stars is a suburban area located on the riverside in Lancashire, with an elevation of around 20 metres. Seven Stars sits near the city of Preston, approximately 5 miles away, and is close to nearby places such as Wade Hall and Lower House. Seven Stars has a population of around 5881 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Seven Stars is situated in the North West region of England, about 185.9 miles from London.

What follows when our technicians reach you in Seven Stars

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
  • Away comes the polluted mixture.
  • Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clean your filter, so what is left in the fuel system is not what caused the trouble.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running properly.

That leaves your car ready to set off. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Seven Stars

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — do not crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal around Seven Stars has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Seven Stars?

One number would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in Seven Stars

I am on a forecourt in Seven Stars. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more often than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Shut off is the way the car stays.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from a lot more often than people fear, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.
