Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shadwell?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Shadwell and the remainder of Greater London. The very first thing to do is not to start the engine. While your engine has not been started and the fuel is still inside your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Contact us before everything else begins, so you will see what follows next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Don't crank it. Started all the same? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off happily, for a couple of miles. Most people get that confused. It's not all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Switching the car's ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has never moved is the simplest one to deal with, and our team would much rather get to an odd spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Shadwell Pierhead, put your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • A van turning up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts E1W 3, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you phone.
  • What was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the engine has started — these three details determine the full job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

How many miles you travelled is what we care about, not how long your motor has been sitting — and here's why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through an engine: it burns, and before burning it greases its injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a rushed top-up on the trip in, it dawning on you somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane left at the nearest station since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were driven with the pump labouring on a fluid drained of much of its protection. Phone us and keep it precisely where it is.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Call us. It's twenty to nine by Blue Gate Fields Junior School, you're late, and the receipt says unleaded — and although three miles in the BMW 1 Series feels like nothing, fuel is metered to demand, and a frantic drive demands plenty of it.

A diesel Audi A6 sitting in the parking area at The Prospect of Whitby holding a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till someone takes it home. Leave the vehicle there overnight then phone next morning. Nothing deteriorates whilst it stands. What we'll ask about is whether the run there was short and chilly, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and whatever won't burn can slip past the rings then into the sump.

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off and ring us. Normal on the way out to Brussels Wharf, flat on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Citroen C3 drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some contracts want the firm to sign off the work, and that's much quicker dealt with up front than later on. Then give us a call about the Vauxhall Insignia, the diesel one, near Wapping Docklands Market. Don't worry that you can't say how full your tank was — nearly no one can two days into a motor, and it's something we check on site. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Shadwell

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

It kicks off at the pump, mostly. Quite often it finishes on site as well. If you are still at the forecourt at JET, that's generally where the drain takes place — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

A forecourt is the single setting it can be caught before the engine has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Very much worth doing. Starting it just to shift four car lengths isn't.

Will we serve your end of Shadwell?

Shadwell is a residential suburb, and so our technicians get out to the town and to the villages near it on the usual runs: St George in the East, Ratcliff, Wapping, Rotherhithe and Limehouse.

We still come. The names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations around Greater London, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Near the border, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Phone and check rather than assuming.

This map is the ground the page covers. The car never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside call-outs around Shadwell

Not everyone has the chance to stop somewhere sensible. Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge on Peartree Lane, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Safe where you are? Sit by it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it. Never fire up the motor to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into the system. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult location, and that is no problem for us.

Run it already? Stop, and read this

Here is where the local M11 comes into it — under 10 miles from Shadwell. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never restart it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible junction then turn off. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It alters what our technicians bring.

All about Shadwell

Shadwell is a suburban area in the East End of London, situated on the north bank of the River Thames. Shadwell sits at a low elevation of around 5 metres, close to the city centre and near neighbouring areas such as St George in the East, Ratcliff, and Wapping. Shadwell is predominantly composed of flat dwellings, housing a population of approximately 19445 residents. Shadwell is located just 1.8 miles from the city of London, making it a convenient residential area.

When we reach you around Shadwell: what happens

  • We check what was put in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • Away comes the polluted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that created the trouble.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • Our technicians turn it on and confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

Then it's ready to set off. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and since everything is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Shadwell AdBlue removal is a separate problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — while this fault under it's a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Shadwell page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Shadwell

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Shadwell motorists

Fuel drains on a Shadwell petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large share of this work happens. Often, provided the site consents: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more often than people assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Still with your car?

Do not turn your engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
