Petrol in Diesel

Shadwell: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Shadwell or the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us and then we shall show you what follows next before you do much else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Do not crank it — and don't trust it if it starts. This is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel normally just cannot run, so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and moves off quite happily for several miles. It is not fine. It is wearing that fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: flicking it on is often enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Holywell Lane, anywhere — a tricky location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode starting LS17 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
  • Three replies determine the whole visit: the fuel you put in, the rough volume involved, and whether anything has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is idle, and so a diesel Renault Megane left at Cross Gates this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pulled diluted diesel through the pump was the journey in. Call us before you set off to fetch the vehicle.

We're in car parks like the one outside The Co-operative Food often, and it's hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the entrance, which decides if a van can reach you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you call, and which way your car is pointing. If there is no clearance to work alongside that Volkswagen Passat, our engineers move it without the engine. That's not pedantry over a few seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of the tank on to the pump, and a car moved twice for a nicer spot is gradually a worse job than one no one touched.

What our technicians will ask about is whether that trip there was brief and cold, as that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can get past the piston rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Ford Focus sitting in the parking area at Red Lion Inn holding a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing deteriorates as it sits, so leave the car overnight then call us in the morning.

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then call us. Normal on the way out to Shadwell Cricket Club, flat on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol weakens diesel; runnier fuel seeps past the precision parts that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Dacia Duster drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our technicians flush it, and take the filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves suggestion you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with fresh diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel BMW 5 Series close to St Paul's and it'll start, which is precisely why the advice sounds sensible. Then the motor sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, because emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Shadwell

Can petrol be drained out of a diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where this work usually kicks off, and where a good chunk of it closes. If you are still at the forecourt at BP, that's generally where the drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent.

A filling station is the single location it is stopped before the motor has fired. Our engineers can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Move it out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Firing it just to roll four car lengths isn't.

Do our technicians reach your corner of Shadwell?

These same rounds get us to Slaid Hill, Wellington Hill, Wike, Bracken Park and Park Villas as well as Shadwell, which is a rural village.

There are separate pages for most places in West Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list means nothing at all about if our technicians come. On a boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Phone and check rather than presuming.

The map outlines the patch the page covers. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and your car does not need to travel to us.

Shadwell: stuck where you pulled up

Not everyone gets the chance to pull in somewhere safe. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Avon Court, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Whether you remain by the vehicle or move clear of it rests on whether sitting in it seems wise. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the mix goes further into the system with every mile driven. Our van driving to a difficult place is no bother for us, and it is far better for the car than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

Here is where the local A64(M) counts, under 5 miles out of Shadwell. Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Never start it to reposition. Get off at the next safe junction then switch off. On a longer drive — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

Where's Shadwell?

Shadwell is a small village in West Yorkshire, situated approximately 4.6 miles from Leeds and 171.9 miles from London. Shadwell sits at an elevation of 142 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Slaid Hill, Wellington Hill, and Wike. Shadwell has a population of around 641 people and predominantly features detached housing.

What follows when we get to you in Shadwell

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
  • The polluted fuel is drawn out of your tank.
  • We clean the fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what is remaining in the system is not what started the problem.
  • Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime your system.
  • We fire it up and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and since everything is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Shadwell is a distinct problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — while this fault underneath it is a different one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Shadwell page. Both are ours to handle.

Shadwell prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what varies it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Shadwell

At a petrol station in Shadwell, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Euro Garages is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

Waiting next to it?

Don't switch the car on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
