Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shardlow?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Shardlow and the remainder of Derbyshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Call us and then our technicians can show you what happens next before you try any more.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically can't run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off happily, for a couple of miles. Most people get that confused. It isn't all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Flicking the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We would much rather come to an odd spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on Glenn Way, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning DE72 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • What got in, approximately how much, plus whether the car has started — those three details determine your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is dormant, so a diesel Volkswagen Passat sitting outside Long Eaton this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew weakened diesel through the pump was the run in. Phone us before you set off to collect the car.

Do not risk it. The journey home from The Dog and Duck is perfectly possible, which is precisely the issue — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the components your fuel is supposed to lubricate. Phone us, then let the Peugeot 3008 stay where it stands.

Here's the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the usual Bottom Wood call — a diesel Vauxhall Astra, out there without complaint and back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it bleeds past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the motor was designed around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Audi Q5 parked by St James' Shardlow scarcely two streets on. Call us, then leave the car off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and your pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence cleaning the lines instead of only clearing your tank.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, a lumpy idle, rattling: that's a wrongly fuelled diesel Volvo XC60 telling you what's wrong. Never restart the car to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, by Shardlow Heritage Centre or anywhere else.

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Plenty of the work begins at the pump, so a good chunk of that is finished on site. Our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Shell that is generally where this drain gets done.

At the forecourt, this gets spotted with the motor never fired, and no place else does that. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car stands.

Push the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the pump, and that's worth doing. Rolling it four bays doesn't merit starting it.

Shardlow and the villages beside it

Those same journeys bring us to Cavendish Bridge, Great Wilne, Ambaston, Church Wilne and Aston-on-Trent as well as Shardlow, which is a village.

Our technicians do come. The names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns in Derbyshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, particularly on the boundary or anywhere your satnav goes wrong. Contact us to enquire.

The area this page covers appears on our map. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your car does not need to come to us.

Stuck at the kerbside in Shardlow

Not everyone has a decent spot to pull over. A common call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge on Ambaston Lane or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Remain beside your car while it is safe to be in it, yet out of the car if it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll bring our van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for your car that's much better than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

The M1 is the one which matters here, and runs under 3 miles from Shardlow. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in the van.

Where is Shardlow?

Shardlow is a village in Derbyshire, situated on the banks of the River Trent at an elevation of 36 metres. Shardlow lies approximately 6 miles south-east of Derby and 108 miles north of London, with nearby places including Cavendish Bridge, Great Wilne, and Ambaston. Shardlow has a population of around 651 people and predominantly consists of detached housing.

What follows when we reach you around Shardlow

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
  • Away comes the tainted fuel.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so the fuel lines get purged and the filter cleaned.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running correctly.

Then it's ready to drive away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Shardlow?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — never start the vehicle — yet the fault isn't. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Shardlow page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Shardlow costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What shifts the price is set out below, because this job is not one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Shardlow motorists

Fuel drains on a Shardlow petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this gets done. Our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave the vehicle off. Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more commonly than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Never turn the engine back on.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way. A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than people fear.
