Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sharoe Green?

If you have not started the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Sharoe Green or the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us so our engineers can tell you what happens next before you try anything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a few miles. People have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And once started, do not believe it: your fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is often sufficient to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Garstang Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you phone, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting PR2 9 — that's what determines whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Three replies shape the whole job: the liquid you put in, the ballpark quantity involved, and if anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Do not run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through that high-pressure fuel pump in real volume on the trip in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is good. There is no need to stand over your Volkswagen Golf at Preston while the work goes on, and we'd much rather speak to you tonight than learn on Monday.

Your diesel Ford Focus will have felt entirely normal on the way back from Queen's Drive Primary School. They always do, and that is the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it generally won't run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and drives off as though nothing has happened — meanwhile your high-pressure pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be giving. Nothing tells you, because from the driver's seat there is nothing to alert you about. Phone with about how far you went and how hard you pushed it; the second one matters more than the first.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through, and petrol thins it. That's the entire process, and it explains the normal Conway Park call: a diesel BMW 1 Series that drove out there without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past clearances instead, and your engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. No part of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

The pump waits before your injectors, so whatever a worn one sheds travels downstream with your fuel — which is why we're direct about not driving on. Phone us, and leave the diesel Citroen C4 Picasso where it is near Fulwood Library.

Cleared, not cleared — that is what a diesel Seat Leon which got as far as Fulwood Leisure Centre needs. Running a diesel puts that mixture into the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Sharoe Green

Clearing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Much of the job starts at a forecourt, meaning a large portion of it ends up completed there. If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that is generally where the drain happens — we operate on station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent.

No place but the forecourt can it be stopped with the motor still unstarted. Our engineers can still put it right where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys are what determine that.

The staff will normally happily move it away from the pump so the next customer can get by. That's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

Places we cover in Sharoe Green

The same journeys take us to Fulwood, Sherwood, Nooklands, Cadley and Lightfoot Green besides Sharoe Green, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places in Lancashire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours. Guessing is the habit to resist, above all on the border or anywhere the satnav struggles. Phone and ask.

That map is the ground this page spans. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is ground our technicians serve, and none of it needs your car to travel to us.

Roadside call-outs in Sharoe Green

Not everybody gets a decent spot to stop. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Sharoe Green Lane because you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Sit with the motor if it is wise to be in it, and clear of the vehicle when it isn't. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to an awkward spot, and that's no trouble for us.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The local M55 is the road which counts here, and it lies under a mile from Sharoe Green. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are usually lost power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and don't start the car to reposition. Long drive? Anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in our van.

Sharoe Green itself

Sharoe Green is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Preston in Lancashire, situated near the River Ribble at an elevation of 46 metres. Sharoe Green sits close to neighbouring areas such as Fulwood and Nooklands, and is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock. Sharoe Green is approximately 2.2 miles from Preston city centre and 191.4 miles from London.

Our job around Sharoe Green, step by step

  • Our engineers check what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • The tainted mixture is drawn out of the tank.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • We turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Sharoe Green is a different job

The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Sharoe Green has its own page with the full story — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Sharoe Green

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Sharoe Green motorists

At a petrol station around Sharoe Green, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work happens. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's consent we attend Shell and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. What settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through the system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists expect.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. The pump still has to put up with it, as your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with your car?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
