Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sharow? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Sharow and the remainder of North Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the motor has not been started and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Contact us so we will tell you what comes from here before you do anything else.
Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Never fire it up — and don't depend on it if it fires up. This is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just will not run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for a few miles. It's not all right. It is eating into your fuel system as you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for just those components.
- Do not add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- A motor that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort out, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Keldale Gardens? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An awkward place suits us better than a started engine.
- Have your position prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts HG4 5 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and our van circling.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether your car has run. These three answers determine the full call-out.
On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel
Plenty of this work begins at a forecourt, which means a large share of that ends up done on site. Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at BP that is typically where the drain gets done.
Before your engine has fired — a forecourt is the only place this ends up halted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.
Attendants will usually help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the help. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.
Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Renault Megane, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at M&S Simply Food now. Time elapsed is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.
Hazards on. Engine off. Ring us. It is twenty to nine outside Sharow Church of England Primary School, you're late, and the receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in your Peugeot 308 seems like nothing, fuel gets supplied on demand, and a frantic drive demands plenty of that.
Here is what a job in the car park by The Magdalens generally looks like. Our engineers arrive at the car, ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three answers determine much of the work. Then the tainted mixture comes out of your tank, the lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable one. Clean diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then we fire it up, check it runs properly, and you set off.
Our engineers clean the fuel lines rather than only emptying that tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already reached the fuel filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop genuinely helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes E-Class parked up near Saint John the Divine a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us and leave it off.
A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle ragged, and your diesel Vauxhall Astra is parked up near St Mary Magdalen Chapel. The motor isn't giving up — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours typically get driven once more before anybody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and phone us.
Coverage near Sharow
Little Studley, Ure Bank, Fisher Green, Copt Hewick, Hutton Conyers — all of those on the runs that take us over to Sharow too, a village.
There are dedicated pages for the majority of places around North Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list means nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Contact us to ask instead of assuming, especially if you're on the border or somewhere your satnav gets wrong.
This map outlines the patch the page spans. Your vehicle never needs to come to us. We operate over every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside call-outs across Sharow
Not everyone gets a decent spot to pull over. A normal call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, finished up on the verge of Dishforth Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights on.
Whether you stay beside your car or stand away from it turns on whether staying nearby is sensible. Never start up the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into your fuel system. However difficult the spot, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than carrying on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
The local A1(M) is the one which matters here, and lies under 3 miles from Sharow. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
Take the next exit that's sensible, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. Long run? Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.
All about Sharow

The call-out around Sharow, step by step
- We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers change what the work actually is.
- Our technicians empty your tank of all the contaminated mixture.
- We rinse your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is left in your system is not what caused the issue.
- The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- Your engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs correctly on new diesel.
From there, you're ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Sharow?
Don't start it: that opening step applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Sharow has its own page with the full story — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Sharow
One price wouldn't be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank holds.
- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?
The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. If it isn't urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Sharow
I'm on a forecourt in Sharow. Can you drain it here?
Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this takes place. Our engineers visit Morrisons and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend drawn through it.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more commonly than motorists expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, emptying and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
Shut off is how the car remains.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let it remain that way. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
