Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sharps Corner?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Sharps Corner and the remainder of East Sussex, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Phone so our team can tell you what comes after that before you do much else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Do not crank it. Fired up anyway? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually cannot run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. People get that muddled. It isn't fine — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you commonly prime the system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • Never pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A car that has not moved is the quickest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Little London Road? Hazards on, and keep the car there. A tricky location works for us better than a started motor.
  • A van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning TN21 0, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you call.
  • What got in, about how much, plus whether the engine has started — the three details shape the entire job. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, parked outside Buxted since this morning? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is inert. It was the drive in that drew weakened diesel through the pump. Phone before you drive the vehicle.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Passat, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at Waitrose now. Time elapsed isn't the thing our engineers need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

Straightforward job, this one — till somebody takes it home. A diesel Peugeot 308 left at The May Garland with petrol in that tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so park the car then ring us once it's light. Expect a question about the run there, though. Brief and cold is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what will not burn can slip past the rings and into the sump.

Three things help when you call from near Horam Chapel: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park next to without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual location our engineers work, and so the spot itself is rarely the issue — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking bay than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain the Mercedes C-Class, change your filter where there is a usable one, flush your lines then put fresh fuel through the entire system, since by this point the worst of it is resting in your lines instead of in the tank.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the motor packing up — and with no warning for it, vehicles in that position usually get driven again before somebody rings. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Volvo XC60 now sitting by Christ Church. Turn the vehicle off and ring us.

Removing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

The work begins at the pump, mostly. Quite often the work ends at one as well. The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Local Fuels? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere our technicians work, and often.

Before the motor has started — a garage is the only place it ends up halted. Our engineers can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Staff will normally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get by. Welcome the help. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

Can our technicians cover your part of Sharps Corner?

Horam, Burlow, Marle Green, Maynards Green, Vines Cross — each of those on our trips that take us out to Sharps Corner too, a small village.

There are pages for nearly all places in East Sussex, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing about whether our engineers come. Ring us to ask rather than presuming, above all when you are on a boundary or anywhere a satnav struggles with.

The map outlines the ground the page spans. All of it is ground we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not move your car anywhere.

Kerbside stops around Sharps Corner

Some drivers have no suitable place to pull over at all. If you noticed after setting off and landed along the verge on Manor Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Out of the motor when it's not wise to wait inside, with it if it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and that blend goes further into the system with every mile covered. However difficult the place, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

The M23 is the one which matters now, and sits under 25 miles from Sharps Corner. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and do not start the car to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring differs.

What our engineers do when we get to you around Sharps Corner

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • We empty the tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Once it is turned on, our technicians make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Sharps Corner?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — never fire it up — yet the problem is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection your fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Sharps Corner page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Sharps Corner

Our technicians can't put one price on this page frankly, as this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much your tank takes.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Sharps Corner motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Sharps Corner?

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
