Petrol in Diesel

Shaw Lands: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has stopped in Shaw Lands or the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. One call our way is plenty: our engineers can show you what comes from here. Try it first.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And once started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Leopold Street, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you phone, have your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting S70 6 — that's what settles whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • What went in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the engine has fired — the three answers settle the full call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at a forecourt?

A large portion of the work ends up completed at the pump, as that is where it mostly kicks off. Still at Gulf? Then that is usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the station.

Nowhere else except a forecourt can it be stopped with your motor still untouched. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That is still not a disaster, and we sort it out where the car sits. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Very much worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Shaw Lands

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at light throttle draws little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia somewhere around Shaw Lands, a boot loaded with shopping, and you sat outside Costcutter — call us. Getting out of the spot is never worth another start. That tank gets drained where it stands, your fuel lines flushed, clean diesel in, and you get home.

Nothing warns you, as from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. The diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt perfectly usual on the way back from Shawlands Primary School, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump does its work without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

Here is what a job in the car park outside Shaw Inn normally looks like. We reach the vehicle, ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since — these three replies determine most of the work. Then the contaminated mix comes out of the tank, your lines get cleaned, and the filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and your system is primed. Then we start the engine, make sure it runs smoothly, and you pull away.

The smaller petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than sloppy. Strange places see most of it for that reason. So: topped up by St Georges Church without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes A-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody spots it, and miles settles how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not your engine packing up — and with no warning for it, motors in that position generally get driven again before anyone calls. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Kia Sportage now waiting by Holy Rood Catholic Church. Turn it off and phone us.

Areas our team reach around Shaw Lands

The same journeys get us to Gateway Plaza, Barnsley, Old Town, Worsbrough Common and Pogmoor along with Shaw Lands, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around South Yorkshire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list means nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come. Contact us to check rather than presuming — county lines above all, and wherever your phone may misread.

Check the map for the patch included on this page. The lot is ground our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

Stuck by the roadside near Shaw Lands

Not everybody gets a chance to pull over anywhere suitable. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge of Fife Street, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you wait beside the vehicle or move clear of it rests on whether staying nearby feels safe. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We will bring the van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for your car that is a lot better than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under a mile out of Shaw Lands, your M1 is what counts now. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what our technicians bring.

What follows when our technicians arrive with you around Shaw Lands

  • We find out what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • Our engineers empty that tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • It is started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running correctly.

From there, you're ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Shaw Lands AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — while this issue beneath it's a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal around Shaw Lands has its own page with the full story — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Shaw Lands?

What shifts the figure is laid out below, since the job is not one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Shaw Lands motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Shaw Lands petrol station forecourt

A fair part of this work gets done there, so yes. Our engineers visit Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more regularly than people assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with your vehicle?

Don't turn your engine back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from far more frequently than people fear, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
