Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sheddens? Don't Start It
Never start the engine. While the fuel is still inside that tank and the engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, across Sheddens and the rest of East Renfrewshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. A single call to us will be plenty: our team will tell you what comes from here. Make it right away.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Do not start the car. Fired up anyway? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically can't run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off happily, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that confused. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
- Turning the ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.
- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so do not pour diesel on top to thin it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Victoria Crescent? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A difficult spot works for us better than a started motor.
- The van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning G76 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both prepared before you call.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the engine has been started. The replies determine all that follows.
Can petrol be taken from your diesel at a forecourt?
The job starts at the pump, generally. Quite often the job finishes on site too. Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement, so if you're still at BP that's usually where this drain happens.
At the forecourt, this is stopped with your motor never run, and no place else manages that. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key settle how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where the car is.
Roll it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they generally will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.
Diesel Volkswagen Tiguan. Some litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Scotmid. That is the phone call we want, because the point underneath it's about amount through the pump instead of hours on the clock.
It will fire up. It will pull away quite happily. That's the trouble, since a diesel on a diluted tank runs usually while wearing down the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, do not chance the trip home from Maxwells — leave the Dacia Duster and phone.
Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then call us. Fine on the way out to Overlee Park, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel leaks past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel BMW 5 Series drove, the less of that pressure it held.
Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is upstream of the injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it loses downstream with your fuel. Call us. Leave the Mercedes A-Class by St Joseph's Church.
Most of these happen somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical not slapdash — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Citroen C3, a fill-up close to Clarkston Baptist Church that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at your injectors.
Sheddens and the places near it
Stamperland, Clarkston, Williamwood, Busby, Millerston — all of them on the runs that bring us over to Sheddens itself, a residential suburb.
Our technicians do come. The places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of towns across East Renfrewshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Close to a boundary, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Phone to ask instead of assuming.
The patch this page includes is on our map. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians cover, and none of that requires the vehicle to come to us.
Stuck on the roadside near Sheddens
Some people have no safe spot to stop whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and finished up along the verge of Springhill Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a normal call for us instead of a rare one.
Whether you wait beside the car or stand clear of it depends on whether staying nearby looks sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. However inconvenient the location, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than carrying on.
Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles
The local M77 is the one that counts here, and runs under 3 miles from Sheddens. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.
Do not restart it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible junction then switch off. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring alters.

When we reach you in Sheddens: what we do
- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- Away goes the tainted mixture.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
- We turn it on and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.
The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.
Sheddens AdBlue removal is a separate matter
If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — do not start the car — yet this problem isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
AdBlue removal around Sheddens has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.
Sheddens prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What shifts the figure is set out below, as the job is not one job and we can't honestly put a single figure on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Sheddens motorists
At a petrol station around Sheddens, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work happens. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something we answer straight away.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?
Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the vehicle off. Driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more frequently than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to cope with it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
Still with the car?
Leave it shut off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
