Petrol in Diesel

What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sheepridge

Whatever you do, never switch the motor on, even briefly, to shift the vehicle. Pause; leave the car off. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever your car has stopped — and nothing decides that more than these next few minutes do. Here's the order of things from here, wherever you're in Sheepridge.

Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

In this order, and before everything else:

  • The keys out of the ignition. Switching your ignition on can be enough to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol out of your tank toward the components it harms. Leave the car off completely.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Get the vehicle easy to see first — hazards on — if there is moving traffic anywhere near you.
  • However short the way, starting it to shift it is the thing to avoid. On a forecourt, push the car away from the petrol pump by hand instead, and ask the attendants to lend a hand.
  • Hold on to the receipt. It says which fuel got in plus about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

On the M62, under 3 miles from Sheepridge, the next junction is the place to leave it; anywhere, the first safe location to stop. Do not push on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Sheepridge fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.

If your engine hasn't run at all:

  • Just that tank has petrol in it so far.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is normally the whole job.
  • This, here, is the best position to be in, and the reason step one counts.

Engine run, even briefly?

  • Some petrol has left that tank already, passed through the fuel filter, and reached the fuel lines.
  • On a bigger run it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.
  • Flushing the lines, your filter dealt with, occasionally more: the job expands as the miles does.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors lubricated as it goes through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that is why the line is drawn there. A tank of petrol, left alone, hurts nothing. Petrol being pumped is wearing the parts that shift it.

Sheepridge, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Whether the technician goes round or finds you comes down to a little planning.

  • Your location: a postcode beginning HD2 1 works best.
  • The road or the car park. A road name is a help — Ashwood Close, or wherever you have stopped.
  • What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, and so mention the landmark — like the one outside Asda.
  • The car. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Sheepridge page.
  • About how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
  • Whether it has run. And if it has, how far and how hard.
  • The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire and company agreements — so it's quicker to settle whose car it is before our technicians get there.

Call 0333 366 0103 once you've got that ready — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .

Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around Sheepridge

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage whilst you wait. So stick to these.

  • Your safety comes before the vehicle. Somewhere exposed? Get away from the traffic and wait away from it. Safe where it stands? Stay with it.
  • A helpful passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anybody checking it still does the trick, or rolling it a couple of yards.
  • Anything from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes the petrol.
  • Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond that tank remains where it is all the same.
  • Keep your ignition off — your windows and your radio too.

When our van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

  • Three questions. What was put in, how much, and whether it's run. The replies decide the job, which is why our price comes after them but not before.
  • Then the tank is cleared, and the tainted fuel is taken out.
  • If it ran, the fuel lines are carrying petrol that has moved beyond the tank — so they are purged.
  • Where the vehicle has a serviceable filter, it is swapped; otherwise, cleared.
  • Clean diesel in, and the fuel system primed.
  • Our technicians fire it up only after new diesel has gone in and primed the system, then make sure that it's running correctly.

Until it runs on fresh diesel, our engineers remain with it. If it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual, and the car returns to normal use straight away.

Sheepridge, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your signal to stop and ring us a second time.
  • Hold on to your paperwork. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • Next time, trust the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
