Shelton Lock: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop. Motor off. Leave it that way — no moment on, no moving it anywhere. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever your car has stopped — and no other factor settles that more than the next few minutes do. Anywhere you happen to be around Shelton Lock, this is the order things run from now.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

Go through these in order, before you do anything else.

  • Pull the keys out. Even your ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, pulling petrol out of your tank to exactly the parts it damages, and so leave it alone entirely.
  • Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mix.
  • Hazards on. If you are at all near moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.
  • The attendants will usually help you push it away from the pump. Let them, then roll it by hand — never under your engine, even for a few yards.
  • Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers both, and that is where our questions start. Do not throw it away.

Noticed on the move? Get off at the next junction if you are on the M1, under 10 miles from Shelton Lock, and pull over somewhere sensible — not at the services farther on. Step one comes after that.

The fork in every Shelton Lock fuel drain: has it run yet?

What comes next rests on one answer, and just one.

Engine never run at all?

  • That petrol is still in the tank and nowhere else.
  • The work is a drain and a flush, normally done where the car stands.
  • This is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of stage one.

If it has been started, even for a second:

  • Petrol has been drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the fuel lines.
  • A longer run carries it all the way to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.
  • The further it went, the bigger the job — the fuel lines, the fuel filter, and sometimes more besides.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. A tank of petrol, left still, damages nothing. Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that move the vehicle.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Shelton Lock, step by step

Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Shelton Lock: what we need

A technician that circles versus a technician that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning DE73 5 serves best.
  • Name the road — Chelwood Road or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Lidl, for example — and it is far quicker to find.
  • The car. Make, model, and that it's a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Shelton Lock page.
  • Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.
  • Has it run? If so, tell us how far it went, and how it was driven.
  • The owner may have to approve the work under some hire or company agreements — so it's quicker to settle whose vehicle it is before we get there.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, the vehicle parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.

Shelton Lock fuel drain on its way? While you wait

During the wait, the harm comes from well-meant help — which is why these matter.

  • Wait with the car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • A kind passer-by doesn't crank it. Nor does anyone checking it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.
  • Something from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.
  • Clearing it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank stays put regardless.
  • Even the radio or your windows aren't worth switching the ignition on for.

The fuel drain, step by step, once our van gets there

  • The price comes after three queries, not before them — what got in, how much, and whether it's run — because those answers decide this job.
  • The tank is drained. The polluted mixture comes from that tank.
  • Petrol that has moved beyond that tank sits in your lines if it ran, and the fuel lines are flushed to clear it.
  • Then the filter: swapped where there is a usable one, cleared where there is not.
  • Clean diesel in, and the system primed.
  • First start on fresh diesel. When priming is complete, the motor is started and our engineers check that it runs smoothly.

Till it runs on clean diesel, we stay with it. Long-term damage is very uncommon if it has been spotted quickly, so your car can go right back to normal driving.

Shelton Lock, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Drive normally. There is nothing special to do once it has been started on clean fuel.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your cue to stop then ring us once more.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was carried out, and so hold on to your documents.
  • Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
