Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shenstone? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Shenstone and the remainder of Staffordshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. When your engine has not been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Call us before all else begins, so you will hear what comes from there.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And having started, don't trust it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it burns it protects — your injection pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: flicking it on is frequently enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those components.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Our team would much rather travel to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on Lynn Lane, that means hazards on and keep the car.
  • Have your position prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts WS14 0 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, about how many litres, and also if the engine has fired. These three facts shape your whole visit.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that high-pressure fuel pump in real volume on the way in, and the way back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Golf outside the nearest station whilst the work happens, and our team would far rather hear from you tonight than find out on Monday.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Mercedes C-Class went, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that run to Shenstone Playing Fields went, then, and that tank is the place to look. Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off and call us.

Why we are firm about not driving on: your pump rests upstream of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a wearing pump loses passes on with your fuel. Leave the Audi A3 near Wesley Hall and call us.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than later on. Then ring us about the BMW 1 Series, the diesel one, close to Trinity Methodist Church. Don't worry that you can't say how full the tank was — almost nobody can two days into a vehicle, and it's something our engineers work out on the spot. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

No warning exists for this, which is why cars in that position generally get driven again before somebody phones. Don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned uneven after a few streets, and your diesel Volvo XC60 is now waiting near Shenstone Community Library and Coffee Shop. Softness there means fuel that cannot build pressure properly rather than a motor giving up. Switch off. Call us.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

It kicks off at a forecourt, usually. Often enough it ends on site too. We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission, and so if you're still at Esso that's typically where this drain gets done.

At the forecourt, the mistake is stopped with your engine never run, and no place else does that. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines together with that tank. That's still not a calamity, and we put it right where the vehicle is. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Welcome the assistance. Cranking the car for four car lengths? No.

Can our engineers serve your end of Shenstone?

Chesterfield, Footherley, Wall, Little Hay, Lynn — all of them on the rounds that take us over to Shenstone itself, a village.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across Staffordshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Ring us and enquire instead of guessing — boundaries particularly, and anywhere your phone can misread.

The ground this page covers is on our map. The lot is ground we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never drive the vehicle anywhere.

Shenstone: stranded where you stopped

Not everyone has a decent spot to stop. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Pinfold Hill as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the usual kind.

Fine where you are? Sit by it. Not fine? Get out and away from it. Never fire it up to get to a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into the fuel system. A van coming to an inconvenient spot is no problem for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled

The local M6 Toll is the road which matters here, and it runs under a mile from Shenstone. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Pull off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and never restart the car to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring alters.

All about Shenstone

Shenstone is a village in Staffordshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of around 102 metres. Shenstone lies approximately 3 miles from the city of Lichfield and 106 miles northwest of London. Shenstone has a mix of old and new housing, with detached homes being the predominant type. Shenstone is close to nearby places such as Chesterfield, Footherley, and Wall.

When we get to you around Shenstone: what we do

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses alter what the work really is.
  • The polluted fuel is pulled from the tank.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • Once it's started, our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From there, you are ready to set off. Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it is very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

Shenstone AdBlue removal is a separate job

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is the same — don't fire it up — yet the problem is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Shenstone page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Shenstone

Frankly, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much your tank takes.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and whether a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Shenstone

I am on a forecourt in Shenstone. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run counts much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more often than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and the car, still together?

Your engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the vehicle remain that way. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Shenstone and throughout Staffordshire.
