Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sherburn? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Sherburn and the remainder of Durham. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. We will explain what the next step will be. Phone — this comes ahead of all else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start the car. And if started, never depend on it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — the injection pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into just those components.
  • Never add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it just gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We'd sooner travel to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on B1283, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.
  • Before you dial, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting DH6 1 — that's what settles whether the van arrives or circles.
  • Three details settle the whole job: the fuel you poured in, the ballpark amount of it, plus whether it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at the forecourt?

Plenty of this work begins at a forecourt, which means a good portion of that gets done on site. If you are still at the forecourt at Tesco, that's typically where the drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement.

A filling station is the only spot this gets stopped before the motor has fired. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key settle how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where the vehicle sits.

The staff will generally happily move the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Sherburn

The phone call our technicians want sounds like this: diesel Volkswagen Passat, some litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now turned off outside Co-op Food. What we are truly asking is how much fuel your pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

Park it there overnight. Call us first thing. Nothing about a diesel Nissan Qashqai parked in the parking area outside Lambton Arms worsens as it sits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains an easy one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The query our technicians arrive with is about that run there: a cold motor over a short distance is where petrol burns least well, and whatever fails to burn can find its way past the piston rings into the engine oil.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Sherburn Village Park in that diesel Mercedes C-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of that.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left the diesel Peugeot 3008 up near Sherburn War Memorial a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave the car off. The short drive genuinely helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so weakened fuel has got to the filter and your pump — which is why our technicians purge the fuel lines rather than only draining your tank.

Somebody sure of themselves will tell you to drain the car then put fresh diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Audi A6 by Saint Mary the Virgin and your engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the trouble: there's petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is suck it back through the pump once more. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Ring us. Your system gets purged, the fuel filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired vehicle from one that only starts.

Service around Sherburn

Sherburn Hill, Sherburn House, Sherburn Grange, Running Waters, Belmont — all of these on our journeys that carry us over to Sherburn itself, a village.

There are pages for most towns across Durham, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from that list says nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Near the boundary, or somewhere your phone misreads? Call us to enquire rather than presuming.

The patch this page spans sits on this map. Every bit of it is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never drive your car anywhere.

Broken down by the kerbside in Sherburn

Not everyone gets the opportunity to stop somewhere suitable. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Hope Street as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.

Fine there? Stay with it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. Do not fire up the engine to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the fuel system. Driving on does your car far more harm than a van heading out to an inconvenient location, and that is no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone

This is where the local A1(M) comes in — under 3 miles away from Sherburn. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in our van.

All about Sherburn

Sherburn is a village situated on the banks of a river in County Durham, England, with Sherburn standing at an elevation of 89 metres above sea level. Sherburn lies approximately 3.1 miles from the city of Durham and is part of the wider North East region. Sherburn has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant in the area. Sherburn is located near several notable places, including Sherburn Hill and Sherburn House.

Once our engineers reach you in Sherburn: what happens

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
  • The tank gets cleared of it.
  • We flush the fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what started the problem.
  • Our engineers put fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • Your engine is turned on and checked to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to set off. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, and as everything is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Sherburn?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas the issue underneath it is a separate one altogether. Petrol thins your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Sherburn page. Both are ours to handle.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Sherburn

What shifts the figure is laid out below, as the job is not one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. If it isn't pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Sherburn

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Sherburn?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this takes place. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer on the spot.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more frequently than people fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

No. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Your engine remains off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

Throughout Durham and around Sherburn: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
