Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shillington? Don't Start It

Do not turn on your engine. While the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, all over Shillington and the rest of Bedfordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Ring us before all else starts, and you will know what comes after that.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Don't crank it — and don't trust it if it runs. This is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just cannot run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and pulls away just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It's grinding the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition off.
  • Never add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Hillfoot Road, anywhere — a tricky spot for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts SG5 3, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, plus if the motor has started — those three details shape the whole visit. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on a forecourt?

A large chunk of this job ends up done at a forecourt, because that's where it mostly begins. Still at Power? Then that's generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.

Before the engine has started — the forecourt is the only location the mistake ends up halted. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

The staff will generally help you push the vehicle clear of the pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Shillington

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Peugeot 308, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside Co-op Food now. Time passed is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both ready. Your Nissan Qashqai will have felt completely ordinary on the way back from Shillington Lower School — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle generally won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, drives off like nothing happened, whilst your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, since behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

Here is the whole mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the ordinary The Spinney call — a diesel Mercedes C-Class, out there without fuss and back down on power, rough at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it escapes past those clearances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was built about. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Ringing from near Shillington Conregational Ghurch? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it's on. Room for our van next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself scarcely counts: on-street is where we work most, and we'd far rather have a cramped spot than a motor somebody has driven somewhere simpler. Then it is a drain for the BMW 1 Series, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in the fuel lines and not that tank.

What takes place next is the issue. The engine at once sucks the petrol left resting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, a person sure of themselves will tell you — and that tip is only half right, since do it to a diesel Volvo XC60 parked up, Shillington Village Hall say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. We flush the circuit and take your filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being put right and the car simply starting.

Can our technicians reach your end of Shillington?

Being a rural village, Shillington sees a steady call, whilst the villages nearby come along on that same run: Hillfoot End and Upton End, Woodmer End and Apsley End, Hanscombe End.

We do come. The names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most towns in Bedfordshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Guessing is the mistake to skip, particularly on the boundary or anywhere a satnav fails. Call us to check.

See our map for the area shown on this page. Your car doesn't need to travel to us. We operate across every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside breakdowns in Shillington

Not everyone gets a chance to stop anywhere sensible. A routine call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge of Elmhurst Gardens or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Safe right there? Wait by it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it. Do not restart your motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into your fuel system. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van coming out to an awkward location, and that's no problem for us.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where your Toddington Services Southbound comes in, under 10 miles from Shillington. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first exit that is safe, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it. Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

Where is Shillington?

Shillington is a village in Bedfordshire, situated inland at an elevation of 58 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type. Shillington lies approximately 35 miles north of London and 16.7 miles from the city of St Albans, near other small settlements like Hillfoot End and Upton End. Shillington has a population of around 1324 residents, living in a relatively small and quiet community. Shillington is surrounded by the rolling countryside of the Eastern region, with nearby Woodmer End also being a part of its local landscape.

Once our engineers arrive with you around Shillington: what follows

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Out goes the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • We start the car and check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to pull away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Shillington?

Do not crank it: that opening rule holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Shillington has its own page with the full story — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Shillington

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what moves it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank holds.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Shillington motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Shillington, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site consents: F C Dawes & Son, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our engineers answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. What settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more frequently than motorists assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, as our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

That engine stays off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
