Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shirebrook? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Shirebrook and the rest of Derbyshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Call us before everything else begins, and you will learn what follows from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start it. And having started, don't depend on it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — your injection pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition off as well: turning it on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • Do not put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We would sooner come to an odd location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on Carter Lane, that means hazards on and leave it.
  • The van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting NG20 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you call.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has been started. Your replies shape all that happens next.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the work mostly starts, and where a large portion of it ends. The drain usually takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the station's permission, that is a place our engineers work, and routinely.

Nowhere except a forecourt can it be stopped with the engine still unstarted. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle stands.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the offer. Firing it just to shift four car lengths is not.

The phone call our engineers like goes like this: diesel Volkswagen Passat, a couple of litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off outside The Co-operative Food. What we are actually asking is how much fuel the pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

Someone will advise you to shift the car out of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, A Voluntary Academy is a hassle; the same vehicle started three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past your filter and into your pump. Stay put, let everyone grumble, and phone us.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Dacia Duster left near The Salvation Army hardly two streets on. Ring us, then leave the vehicle off. A short drive does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence flushing the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank.

Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — by Hole in the Wall project or anywhere at all. Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfilled diesel Peugeot 3008 telling you what is wrong.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor packing up — and with no warning light for it, vehicles in that position normally get driven a second time before somebody phones. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Audi A3 now resting by Shirebrook Library. Turn the vehicle off and ring us.

Can our engineers serve your part of Shirebrook?

As a town, Shirebrook gets a frequent call, and the places close by go with it on the same round: Langwith Junction and Upper Langwith, Langwith and Sookholme, Warsop Vale.

There are pages for the majority of places around Derbyshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing about if our technicians come. Contact us and enquire instead of assuming — county lines above all, and wherever a satnav tends to struggle with.

That map is the patch the page includes. All of that is ground our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive the car anywhere.

Stranded by the kerb anywhere in Shirebrook?

Some drivers have no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge on Victoria Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a routine call for us rather than an unusual one.

Fine where you are? Wait by it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However inconvenient the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than driving on.

Run it already? Stop, then see this

This is where the M1 comes in, under 5 miles out of Shirebrook. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It affects what our engineers bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

A bit about Shirebrook

Shirebrook is a town situated inland in Derbyshire, England. It is located near major roads, providing connections to surrounding towns. Shirebrook is nestled close to the borders of Nottinghamshire, making it a significant settlement in the region. The town's position allows for easy access to nearby districts.

What happens when our engineers reach you in Shirebrook

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tainted mixture comes from the tank.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the problem, and so the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • It is run with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running correctly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. We do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Shirebrook is a separate matter

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this fault is not. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up in its place.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Shirebrook has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

Shirebrook prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what varies it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Shirebrook

I'm on a forecourt in Shirebrook. Can you drain the car here?

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement we attend Morrisons and the other forecourts around town all the time.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. What settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through the system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more commonly than motorists assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

That engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
