Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shiregreen? Don't Start It

Never fire up the motor. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, throughout Shiregreen and the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. We shall tell you what the following part is. Ring us — that comes ahead of anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Don't start the vehicle. Turned on all the same? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally can't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off happily, for several miles. Motorists get that backwards. It isn't all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you frequently prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those components.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • We would rather get to an odd spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to deal with than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Ronksley Road, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Have your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts S5 0 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between a van arriving and our van circling.
  • Three replies decide the full job: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate amount involved, and whether it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a rushed fill on the trip in, and it dawns on you around eleven — by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been sitting at Meadowhall for three hours. Call us and keep the vehicle just where it sits. The run in is the part that matters here, as diesel does two tasks on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were done with the pump labouring on a fuel that had lost much of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing our engineers ask is how far you drove, not how long the vehicle has been standing.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we are actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the call our technicians hope for goes like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now shut off at Ozmen Extra.

Nothing warns you, since from behind the wheel there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt entirely ordinary on the way back from Hartley Brook Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle mostly refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

Your Audi A4 stays where it is in the car park at Ecco Tap Bar for the whole job, which typically runs like this. First our engineers ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since, because most of the work rests on those replies. The tank is emptied of the contaminated mix, the lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it's a replaceable one. With fresh diesel in and the system primed, the car is fired up and checked, and once it's running correctly you pull away.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you phone us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it afterwards. Then phone us about the Mercedes GLC close to Shiregreen And District Community Centre, and do not worry that you cannot say how full your tank was. Almost no one can, in a vehicle they collected two days ago, and our technicians work it out there. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Shiregreen

Clearing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Plenty of the job starts at the pump, meaning a large portion of it is done at one. If you are still on the forecourt at Morrisons, that's typically where this drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

Nowhere else except a garage can the mistake be caught with the motor still unrun. Our engineers can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Worth doing. Cranking the car to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Areas we cover around Shiregreen

Shiregreen is a residential suburb, and our team are out to the town and to the villages near it on those same runs: Pismire Hill, Grange Lane, Sheffield Lane Top, Firth Park and High Wincobank.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of towns around South Yorkshire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing at all about if we come. Presuming is the mistake to skip, especially on a boundary or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Ring us and ask.

The ground the page covers sits on the map. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is ground our technicians work on, and none of it asks the vehicle to move to us.

Stranded by the kerb somewhere around Shiregreen?

Some people get no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge of Sicey Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Out of your car when it is not sensible to sit in it, by it if it is. Do not start it up to reach a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into the system. A van coming to an inconvenient place is no trouble for us, and it's far better for your car than carrying on.

Run it already? Stop, then see below

Here is where the local M1 comes into it — under a mile from Shiregreen. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are generally lost power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Take the first exit that is sensible, pull up there, and never start the car to move it. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring alters.

Where's Shiregreen?

Shiregreen is a suburban area in South Yorkshire, situated near the River Don and approximately 3.5 miles from Sheffield city centre. Shiregreen has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant in the area. Shiregreen sits at an elevation of around 112 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Shiregreen is close to several local landmarks, including Pismire Hill and Grange Lane.

The call-out in Shiregreen, step by step

  • We find out what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • Away comes the tainted mixture.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the trouble, and so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

At that point it is ready to set off. There is no need for a workshop at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Shiregreen is a separate problem

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — never fire it up — yet this fault isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Shiregreen page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Shiregreen

One price would not be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much your tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Shiregreen motorists

Fuel drains on a Shiregreen petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement we visit Esso and the other forecourts locally regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What determines how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through the system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more regularly than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. The pump still has to cope with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and the car, still together?

Never switch the engine on again.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
