Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shirehampton?
Never turn on your engine. If the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not been started, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that is settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Shirehampton and the remainder of Bristol, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Phone before everything else happens, and you will hear what follows from there.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do first
- Don't fire it up. Started anyway? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically will not run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. People get that reversed. It's not all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Flicking your ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.
- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so never tip diesel on top to water down it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we'd much rather come to an odd spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Park Hill, turn the hazards on then keep it there.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting BS11 0, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, about how much, and also whether the engine has run. These three facts decide your whole call-out.
How many miles you drove is what we care about, not how long the motor has been parked — and this is why. Diesel has two tasks on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before burning it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a hurried fill on the way in, the penny dropping somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane parked outside the nearest station since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were driven with the pump labouring on a liquid drained of most of its protection. Ring us and keep the car just where it is.
Easy job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Mercedes C-Class left at The George Inn with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so leave the car then call us once it is light. Expect a query about that run there, though. Short and chilly is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the oil.
Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Since your pump is before the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it sheds onward with the fuel. Call us. Leave the Audi A3 near Shirehampton Baptist Church.
A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, rattling: that's a misfuelled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what's wrong. Never start it to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, near Shirehampton Methodist Church or anywhere else.
That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not your engine packing up — and with no dashboard light for it, motors in that position normally get driven once more before somebody rings. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Citroen C3 now resting near St Mary's Church. Switch the vehicle off and ring us.
Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at the forecourt?
A fair portion of this job is completed at a pump, because that's where it often kicks off. Still at Texaco? Then that's generally where it happens. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.
Before your motor has run — the forecourt is the single setting this gets halted. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines as well as the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we deal with it where your car stands. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.
Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Moving it four bays doesn't merit cranking the engine.
Shirehampton plus the areas beside it
Shirehampton is a residential suburb, and our vans go out to it and to anywhere by it on those same runs: Pill, Ham Green, Lawrence Weston, Stoke Bishop and Lodway.
If yours is not on this list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of towns in Bristol, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours. Call us and enquire instead of presuming — borders especially, and anywhere your phone might get wrong.
Use this map for the area covered on this page. All of that is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't bring your vehicle anywhere.
Shirehampton: broken down wherever you pulled up
A chance to pull over somewhere sensible does not come to everyone. A routine call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge beside The Green or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.
Fine where you are? Stay beside it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Do not start up your engine to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into your fuel system. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward location, and that's no bother for us.
Run it already? Stop, then read below
This is where the local M5 counts, under a mile out of Shirehampton. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.
The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. It affects what we bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer trip — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.
Shirehampton itself
Shirehampton is a suburban area in the coastal part of Bristol, situated approximately 4 miles from the city centre. Shirehampton sits at an elevation of around 40 metres, overlooking the River Avon and the Bristol Channel. Shirehampton is bordered by nearby places such as Pill, Ham Green, and Lawrence Weston, and is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock. Shirehampton is located about 109.5 miles west of London, making it a commuter-friendly location.
What we do when our technicians reach you around Shirehampton
- The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
- The tank gets drained of everything.
- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that caused the problem.
- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
- We turn it on and make sure it runs properly on new diesel.
At that point it is ready to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare.
Shirehampton AdBlue removal is a separate job
If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this issue isn't. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Shirehampton page. Both are ours to handle.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Shirehampton
Our technicians cannot put one price on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What moves it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much your tank takes.
- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: common queries in Shirehampton
I'm on a forecourt around Shirehampton. Can you drain it here?
Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this takes place. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Lodway Service Station is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix sucked through it.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.
Standing next to it?
Your engine stays off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
Throughout Bristol and in Shirehampton: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
