Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sholing Common?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Sholing Common and the rest of Hampshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When your engine has not run and the fuel is still inside the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Contact us and then we will explain what follows from here before you attempt anything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Do not fire it up. Started regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off fine, for a few miles. Most people get that backwards. It isn't all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: switching it on is often enough to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into just those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so don't put diesel on top to dilute it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never moved is the easiest one to sort, and we'd rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Ruby Road, switch your hazards on and keep it there.
  • A van arriving instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning SO19 7, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you call.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, about how much, and if the car has been turned over. Those responses decide everything that follows.

Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through the high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the way in, and the drive back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over your Renault Megane at Sholing while the work happens, and we would much rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

We are in car parks like the one outside Delikatesy Smaczek all the time, and it is rarely the fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height limit at the entrance, which settles whether a van gets to you at all. So say how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way the car is pointing. If there's no space to work beside your Skoda Octavia, our engineers move it without the engine. That is not pedantry over a few seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of that tank toward your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a better space is silently a harder job than one nobody touched.

Your diesel Ford Focus will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from Sholing Junior School. They always do, and that's the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it usually will not run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and moves off as though nothing has happened — all the while your high-pressure pump works without the protection your fuel is supposed to be giving. Nothing warns you, because from the driver's seat there is nothing to warn you about. Phone us with roughly how far you drove and how hard you pushed it; the second answer matters more than the first.

A diesel Dacia Duster in the car park at The Red Lion with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up until someone drives it home. Leave it overnight and phone us first thing. Nothing worsens while it stands. What we'll want to know is whether the trip there was brief and cold, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and what does not burn can get past the rings and into the oil.

What occurs next is the trouble. The motor immediately sucks the petrol still sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, since draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, somebody certain will tell you — and that tip is only half right, as do it to a diesel Citroen C3 parked up, Christ the King and St. Colman say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. We flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where the car has a working one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being put right and the vehicle merely starting.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel on a forecourt?

The job begins at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often the job wraps up there too. The drain normally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Southampton Logs? Given the station's agreement, that's a spot our engineers work, and often.

The forecourt is the only setting this is caught before the motor has run. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key decide how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car is.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Well worth it. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

Parts we cover around Sholing Common

Being a coastal area, Sholing Common gets a steady call, while the places close by come with it on the same trip: Merry Oak and Bitterne, Thornhill and Harefield, Sholing.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for the majority of locations around Hampshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours. Near a boundary, or anywhere your phone can't find? Contact us to check instead of guessing.

That map shows the area this page covers. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and your car never needs to travel to us.

Broken down at the kerbside near Sholing Common

The chance to pull in somewhere suitable does not fall to everyone. Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge beside Deacon Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you wait by the vehicle or move clear of it turns on if being nearby feels wise. Do not fire it up to get to a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into your fuel system. We'll take the van to a difficult place without any fuss, and for the vehicle that's much better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has rolled

The local M27 is the one that counts now, and it sits under 3 miles from Sholing Common. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Never restart it to move it. Pull off at the first safe junction then turn off. Long run? Anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.

A bit about Sholing Common

Sholing Common is a locality situated near the coast in southern Hampshire, with Sholing Common being close to the major city of Southampton. Sholing Common has an elevation of 49 metres and is located near other localities such as Merry Oak, Bitterne, and Thornhill. Sholing Common is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the area's residential nature.

When our engineers arrive with you around Sholing Common: what follows

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.
  • The polluted fuel is pulled from the tank.
  • Our technicians purge your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what created the problem.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and we check that it is running smoothly.

That leaves it ready to set off. Our engineers do everything wherever the car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Sholing Common?

The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Sholing Common page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Sholing Common

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much that tank can hold.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Sholing Common

Fuel drains on a Sholing Common petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer there and then.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. What decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable much more often than drivers expect.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Do not turn it on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. This is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
