Petrol in Diesel

Sibsey: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still inside that tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has ended up in Sibsey or the rest of Lincolnshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Our team can tell you what the next part will be. Phone — that happens before anything else.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you don't crank it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Leave your ignition off also. Diesel performs two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which carries that petrol out of that tank then into exactly those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that hasn't moved is the quickest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Main Road? Hazards on, and keep the car there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started motor.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode that starts PE22 0 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how much, and also if the engine has fired. Those three replies decide the whole call-out.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Forecourts are where this work usually starts, and where a fair portion of it finishes. Still at Gulf? Then that is typically where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.

Before your engine has fired — a forecourt is the only location the mistake is halted. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where the car sits.

The attendants will usually help you roll the car out from the pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Cranking the car for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Sibsey

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Ford Focus, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Lincolnshire Co-op now. Time passed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

Every restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol past the fuel filter and into the pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Dacia Duster on the zig-zags at The Sibsey Free Primary School is a hassle, whereas the same car restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Someone will urge you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. Leave it there, let them grumble, then call us.

You drive off at the end, once our engineers have started the car and checked it runs correctly on clean diesel, with the system bled. Before that, in the car park outside The White Hart, the polluted fuel comes out of your tank, the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your BMW 5 Series has a serviceable one. It all begins with three questions when our technicians get to the vehicle: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Normal on the way out, flat on the way back. If that's how that trip to Sibsey Community Park went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol thins diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the close-fitting components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther your Vauxhall Astra travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off and phone us.

By this point your tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the blend is in the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Volkswagen Polo that got close to Sibsey Trader Mill needs your system flushed, not drained.

Service around Sibsey

Sibsey is a rural village, and so we head out to it and to the areas around it on those same rounds: Sibsey Fen Side, High Ferry, Northlands, Hilldyke and Frithville.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations across Lincolnshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours. Assuming is the mistake to resist, particularly on a boundary or somewhere your phone gets lost. Call us to enquire.

This map is the area this page covers. The lot is ground our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not drive your vehicle anywhere.

Stuck on the kerbside anywhere around Sibsey?

Some people get no suitable spot to pull in at all. If you realised after setting off and ended up on the verge of Old Main Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Whether you wait with the car or move clear of it hangs on whether being there seems safe. Don't restart it to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the fuel system. We will bring our van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for the car that is much better than driving on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where the local A1(M) counts, under 50 miles from Sibsey. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in the van.

All about Sibsey

Sibsey is a small village in the East Midlands region of England, situated in the county of Lincolnshire, with Sibsey being close to the nearby settlements of Sibsey Fen Side and High Ferry. Sibsey sits at a low elevation of around 8 metres above sea level, in an area of predominantly flat landscape. Sibsey has a population of approximately 1229 people, with Sibsey being characterised by its detached housing stock.

Our call-out in Sibsey, step by step

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tainted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It is run with new diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running properly.

That has it ready to set off. We do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Sibsey?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas this fault under it is a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Sibsey page. Both are ours to handle.

Sibsey pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what changes it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Sibsey drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Sibsey?

Yes, and it is where a big share of this work takes place. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Kings Garage is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with the car?

Switched off is how the car remains.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
