Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Skipsea? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Skipsea and the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the engine has not yet run and the fuel is still inside your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Contact us before anything else starts, so you'll learn what comes after that.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And once started, don't depend on it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone too: turning it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into precisely those components.
- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Our team would sooner get to a difficult place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Main Street, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
- Keep your location prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts YO25 8 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van arriving and a van circling.
- Three answers shape your whole visit: the liquid you put in, the approximate measure of it, plus if anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Quarter past eight. A quick top-up on the trip in. Close to eleven it occurs to you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Passat has stood outside Nafferton for three hours. Ring us then keep it where it is. What matters is the drive in, as diesel both burns and — before that — greases your pump and your injectors, but petrol only ever combusts. Those couple of miles worked your pump on a fuel drained of a great deal of its protection, and no volume of sitting in a car park gives any of that back. Hence the question about miles instead of hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave your keys be until our technicians arrive.
You'll be urged to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside Skipsea Primary School, a misfilled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime drags more petrol through the filter toward your pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.
Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle waits, as a diesel Audi A4 parked at The Green is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.
The pump sits upstream of the fuel injectors, so whatever a wearing one loses travels downstream with the fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Call us, and leave your diesel Mercedes C-Class where it is by Skipsea Methodist Church.
A throttle gone limp, white smoke, an uneven idle, knocking: that is a wrongly fuelled diesel Dacia Duster telling you what is wrong. Do not restart it to find a better place — switch off where you have stopped, near Skipsea Village Hall or anywhere else.
Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?
It kicks off at a pump, generally. Frequently the job ends on site as well. Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent, so if you are still at Thrust that's normally where this drain happens.
A forecourt is the single place the mistake is caught before your engine has started. The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car stands.
Out from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Very much worth doing. Cranking the car over four car lengths? No.
Places our vans reach around Skipsea
Skipsea is a coastal village, and so our team are out to it and to the areas by it on those same runs: Skipsea Brough, Dringhoe, West End, Ulrome and Upton.
If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for most locations in East Riding of Yorkshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Presuming is the mistake to resist, particularly on the border or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Ring us to ask.
The area the page includes is on the map. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and your car never needs to come to us.
Broken down at the roadside in Skipsea
Not everyone gets a sensible place to pull in. If you noticed after setting off and ended up on the verge of Back Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a common call for us and not an odd one.
Safe there? Stay beside it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Our van heading to a difficult spot is no trouble for us, and it's much better for the car than driving on.
Driven it already? Pull over, then see below
under 25 miles from Skipsea, the M62 is what matters here. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they come are generally lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.
Do not restart it to move it. Come off at the first sensible junction and switch off. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our engineers bring changes.
A little about Skipsea
Skipsea is a small coastal village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, situated near the North Sea at an elevation of around 8 metres. Skipsea lies approximately 16.7 miles east of Kingston upon Hull and is surrounded by nearby places such as Skipsea Brough and Dringhoe. Skipsea has a population of around 679 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Skipsea is located about 170.7 miles north of London, in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.
The visit in Skipsea, step by step
- Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- The tank gets emptied of it.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
- It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running smoothly.
From there, you are ready to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Skipsea is a distinct job
If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — do not start the car — yet this problem isn't. The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.
Both are ours. There is a separate Skipsea page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Skipsea pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What shifts the figure is listed below, as this job isn't one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single figure on this page.
- This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
- Where your car is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Skipsea
Fuel drains on a Skipsea petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this gets done. Our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that blend drawn through it.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It is salvageable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, even though driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A drain then flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Is the vehicle still with you?
Do not turn your engine on again.
Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
