Skye Green: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With your tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Skye Green and the rest of Essex, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Call us and our technicians shall show you what follows from here before you attempt any more.
Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- While you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That's why you don't start it, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition off as well: switching it on is commonly enough to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Mill Lane, anywhere — an awkward location for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a car that never moved.
- A van showing up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting CO5 9, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you phone.
- Three details determine your whole call-out: the liquid you poured in, the approximate amount involved, and whether anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has pushed real volume through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return trip would close to double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can sit outside Kelvedon perfectly happily. Call from the platform if handier; standing over us whilst our technicians work isn't required.
Three answers decide much of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them as soon as we arrive at the vehicle in the car park outside Kings Arms. Next the tainted mix comes out of that tank, your lines are rinsed, and where your Dacia Duster has a replaceable filter, it comes off. When fresh diesel is in and the system primed, our engineers start it and make sure it runs correctly before you drive away.
Pull over somewhere safe, turn off then ring us. Happy on the way out to The Green, gutless on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol thins diesel; runnier fuel leaks past the precision parts that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Audi A3 drove, the less of that pressure it held.
Three things help when you ring from near Feering Evangelical Church: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our technicians work, and so the location itself is seldom the trouble — we would far rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain the BMW 1 Series, change your filter where there is a usable one, flush the fuel lines then put fresh fuel through the whole system, since by this point the worst of it is resting in the lines rather than in that tank.
It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, the idle turned ragged, and the diesel Ford Kuga is now sitting near St James the Less, Little Tey. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly instead of your engine giving up — and since there is no warning light for it, cars in that position usually get driven once more before anyone phones. Please don't. Switch it off then call us.
On the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel
It starts at a forecourt, usually. Frequently it ends there too. If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that's usually where this drain gets done — we operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.
Before your motor has run — a forecourt is the single location it is caught. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key.
Wheel it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Starting it for four car lengths? No.
Parts our vans serve around Skye Green
Being a small village, Skye Green has a regular visit, and its neighbours nearby come with it on that same journey: Surrex and Broad Green, Salmons Corner and Stocks Green, East Gores.
There are dedicated pages for most locations across Essex, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from that list means nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Guessing is the habit to skip, especially on a border or anywhere a satnav fails. Phone to check.
That map shows the patch this page includes. The vehicle does not need to move to us. Our technicians work across all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Stuck by the roadside near Skye Green
Not everyone has a safe place to pull in. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Skye Green Road as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.
Out of the vehicle while it's not safe to sit in it, beside it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: restart it to get to somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. A van driving to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the car than driving on.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles
The local M11 is the one which matters here, and it lies under 25 miles from Skye Green. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they arrive are generally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.
The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

What our technicians do when our engineers get to you in Skye Green
- We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
- That tank is drained completely.
- What is left in the system should not be what created the trouble, so the fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
- Once it's turned on, our engineers make sure it runs properly on new diesel.
Then it's ready to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.
Skye Green AdBlue removal is a distinct job
The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Skye Green has its own page with the detail — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.
Skye Green costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
One price wouldn't be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.
Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel questions from Skye Green drivers
I am on a forecourt around Skye Green. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the vehicle off. Driving moves the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There is no need to take it to a main dealer, since our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.
You, and your car, still together?
Turned off is how it stays.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
