Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Slough

Do not start the motor. If the petrol is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Slough and the rest of Berkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Our technicians shall show you what your next step is. Contact us — that goes ahead of everything else.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you never trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: flicking it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and we would rather drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on High Street, switch the hazards on then leave it there.
  • Our van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts SL1 1, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you phone.
  • Three answers shape your whole job: the stuff you poured in, the approximate measure of it, plus whether it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this work starts at the pump, which means a fair share of that gets finished on site. The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the station's agreement, that's a place we work, and often.

Before your motor has started — the forecourt is the single spot it ends up stopped. Our technicians can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the offer. Cranking it just for four car lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Slough

We're in car parks like the one outside Tesco Extra often, and it is hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height limit at the entrance, which determines if our van gets to you at all. So say how boxed in you are when you call, and which way the car is pointing. If there is no room to work beside that Skoda Octavia, our engineers roll it without the engine. That is not pedantry over a few seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of the tank towards the pump, and a motor moved twice for a roomier space is silently a harder job than one nobody touched.

None of it is the motor failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it is why the usual Slough Bowls Club call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes C-Class drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past gaps, delivery arrives weaker and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is put right.

Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is before the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it loses onward with your fuel. Ring us. Leave the Audi A3 near Queensmere.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about the diesel Ford Kuga close to The Village. You'll not know how full the tank was. Barely anyone does, two days into a motor, and it gets worked out there anyway. Our engineers ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor knocks and smokes and flattens off.

What takes place next is the issue. The engine straight away sucks the petrol still sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, somebody sure of themselves will tell you — and that tip is half right, because do it to a diesel Kia Sportage parked up, the curve say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush your circuit and take your filter off where the car has a workable one, and that is the difference between the car being put right and the car just starting.

Service around Slough

Being a town, Slough sees a steady call, and the villages nearby go with it on that same trip: Upton Park and Myrke, Salt Hill and Upton, Chalvey.

We still come. The names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of towns across Berkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Near the border, or anywhere the satnav gets wrong? Ring us and ask instead of guessing.

The patch this page covers is on our map. Your car never needs to come to us. Our technicians work across all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded on the roadside in Slough

Some people have no safe spot to pull in whatsoever. Set off, then twigged? Finished up by the verge of Chapel Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Out of the motor while it isn't wise to wait inside, with it if it is. Don't fire it up to reach a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into your fuel system. However difficult the location, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

under a mile out of Slough, your M4 is what matters now. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and don't restart it to move it. Assume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you call. What our engineers bring alters.

About Slough

Slough is a town in Berkshire, situated approximately 20 miles west of London, with a relatively low elevation of around 35 metres above sea level. Slough sits in the inland area of the South East region, near the M4 motorway, and is close to nearby places such as Upton Park and Salt Hill. Slough has a diverse population of around 42,421 people, predominantly residing in flats. Slough is also near the historic village of Myrke and the larger city of St Albans, which is about 20 miles away.

Our call-out around Slough, step by step

  • Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled from that tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that started the issue.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • After it's turned on, our technicians check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. We do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Slough

Never fire it up: that opening step holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Slough page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Slough pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers can't put one price on this page frankly, as the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel in Slough

I'm on a forecourt in Slough. Can you drain the car here?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's permission we work at Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more regularly than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Keep the car turned off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

Across Berkshire and in Slough: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
