Petrol in Diesel

Snaith: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. All over Snaith and the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. One ring to us is plenty: we can show you what happens next. Make this right away.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And if started, never depend on it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition stays off too — switch it on and you frequently prime your system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for precisely those parts.
  • Do not put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply gives you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we would sooner travel to a difficult location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Beast Fair, put your hazards on and leave it there.
  • Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting DN14 9 — that is what settles whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what was put in, about how many litres, and whether the car has been started. Your replies settle whatever happens next.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill on the drive in, and it dawns on you close to eleven — by that point the diesel Skoda Octavia has been standing outside the nearest station for three hours. Phone us then leave the vehicle right where it is. The trip in is the bit that matters here, since diesel does two jobs on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were covered with your pump running on a fluid that had shed much of the protection it is designed around — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you drove, not how long the vehicle has been stood.

Twenty to nine. By Snaith Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn your hazards on, leave your motor alone, and ring us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Dacia Duster or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a drive taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.

Leave the Vauxhall Astra near St Laurence Priory Church then call us. We are blunt about not driving on as a worn-out pump sheds, and what it sheds moves on with the fuel to your injectors downstream.

A car you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the volume of petrol arriving at your injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so strange locations see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, close to Snaith Methodist Church or not, and we'll head to the Ford Kuga.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly, not the motor giving up — and with no warning for it, motors in that position usually get driven a second time before somebody rings. Please don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Mercedes A-Class now resting by Gym. Turn it off then phone us.

Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

It begins at a forecourt, typically. Regularly the job ends there too. We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent, and so if you are still at Gulf that's usually where this drain takes place.

At a forecourt, it gets halted with your motor never started, and nowhere else does it. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key determine how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where the vehicle is.

Wheel it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Moving the car four spaces does not justify firing the engine.

Snaith plus the villages next to it

The same trips carry us to West Cowick, Carlton, East Cowick, Gowdall and Pollington along with Snaith, which is a village.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and nearly all locations across East Riding of Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Call us and enquire rather than presuming, above all when you are on a border or anywhere your phone can't find.

The patch the page spans sits on the map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our technicians work on, and none of it needs your car to travel to us.

Roadside breakdowns in Snaith

Not everyone finds a sensible place to stop. If you realised after setting off and ended up on the verge on Shearburn Terrace, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a common call for us and not a rare one.

Whether you sit by the car or move away from it hangs on if being in it feels wise. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: restart the car to get to somewhere safer and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to a tricky location, and that's no problem for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has rolled

The M62 is the one that matters now, and it sits under a mile from Snaith. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't start it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible junction and switch off. It affects what our technicians bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

Snaith itself

Snaith is a village situated on the banks of the River Aire in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a population of around 2041 residents. Snaith sits at a low elevation of 12 metres, close to the nearby villages of West Cowick, Carlton, and East Cowick. Snaith is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Snaith is located near the city of Doncaster, approximately 12 miles away, and is about 155 miles north of London.

What follows when our engineers arrive with you around Snaith

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The contaminated mixture is pulled out of that tank.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • After it's fired up, we make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Snaith is a separate problem

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — never start the car — yet this fault isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Snaith page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Snaith?

Honestly, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much the tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel questions from Snaith motorists

At a petrol station in Snaith, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians work at Carlton Service Station and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more regularly than people fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate issue. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, as we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Still with your vehicle?

Switched off is how it remains.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more commonly than people fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
